Is there something that you are so scared of?
For me growing up was having an open closet, You see I saw this cartoon called ghost busters and they had an episode where they went after the boogyman, and he come through a portable that would open in the closet. even as an adult I always had to keep my closet doors shut.
But there is something many of us are scared of and that is of our past. We do not want to confront who we are and many times we look at our past and for us and many others, our past defines us.
Throughout my ministry I have heard people say, “Man, You just do not know what I have done.”
In fact I have said those words myself.
But even if you do not have a shady past we all have at least something that we regret, and many times that thing that we regret keeps coming back to us.
But what does God have to say about our past?
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
Wait a second, The old is Gone, and the New is here.
But why then does the Old keep making a comeback in our lives?
We often dwell on past mistakes, consumed by shame or guilt, but every moment we spend looking back blinds us to the powerful ways Christ is working in our lives right now. How can we embrace His transforming grace if our eyes are fixed on what He’s already forgiven?
Romans 8:1–2 NIV
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
God has set us free through the sacrifice that was made on the cross and what has been done in the past is in the past, YOU CANNOT do anything to change that moment, but God can deliver you from that sin, from that shame, from that Guilt.
Our past is just that PAST, and if you have given your life to Him well Romans is for you
Romans 6:4 NIV
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
See we have a new life ,
that Person from before is gone, that person does not define you, it is not who you are
When we give our lives to Christ, God no longer cares who you were, because he sees Christ in our place, He cares about who you will be, and who you are.
God refuses to leave us the way we are, and wants us to live in the full potential of who we are in Christ.
We Just have to get past our past because it’s us that keeps going back and reliving it.
Another Danger in living in our past is that we may be doomed to repeat it.
I have a buddy that once drove his truck into a tree, the only tree in the entire lot because all he did was focus on the tree.
When we focus so much on our past we start to hear the lies
That is who you really are
you never can changed
how can you be forgive with all you have done
these are lies and have no place in our hearts
That is who you really are??
NO, remember in the start of this sermon in Corinthians?
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
YOU ARE A NEW CREATION
You Never can change
You CAN
Philippians 1:6 NIV
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
YOU CAN CHANGE, and you are not alone in that Change because God is With you in this time
How can I be forgiven with all I have done
Because Christ Died for you
1 John 1:9 NIV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
We are forgiven it is not God that is holding our past against us, but we are.
It’s time to let go of that guilt and shame
It’s time to Let God come into your life and fill that emptiness you are feeling from that sin
Its time to stop living in the lies, and start living in the truth
It you are going back to a sin and you just can’t figure out why, this may be the reason, don’t be like my buddy and hit the only tree within a mile, don’t keep dwelling on that sin, its time to let it Go
Another reason why the past sins keep coming back and we cannot get over it is because it has not been addressed.
1 John 1:9 NIV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Its time to confess it and let God forgive those sins and then leave it behind
Something I do when the past keeps coming back is confront it with the truth

That Is Not Who I AM

The only way to combat a lie is with truth
I am a follower of Christ, and the old is gone

I Am Forgiven

I am a follower of Christ, and I am forgive because of Jesus

I Am Changing, Everyday

Christ isn’t done with me, and everyday I am getting closer to Him.
This week I want you to start taking ahold of the lies that come into you mind, and start answering them with truth, and then throw out that garbage that has no place in your life any longer.

Communion

1 Corinthians 11:23–26 NIV
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Hebrews 10:17–18 NIV
Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
