Knot the Way

Opening Illus: knotted up cord.
Eventually want to give up! No amount of struggle makes it better because if you can get the tangles out, there are always more.
This is life on earth. No lasting peace. It’s been this way since Eden.
· When sin entered, peace left
· Life became hopelessly entangled with sin.
· See this all throughout Scripture – No one immune: Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Apostles, etc. – all had a sin problem/a “tangled-cord life”, which led to a peace problem.
David penned the anthem for all who were infected since Eden: Psalm 13:1-2
Psalm 13:1–2 (CSB)
1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long will I store up anxious concerns within me, agony in my mind every day? How long will my enemy dominate me?
How long?
David didn’t know how long God would let sin reign, but He knew God
Psalm 13:5–6 (CSB)
5 But I have trusted in your faithful love; my heart will rejoice in your deliverance. 6 I will sing to the Lord because he has treated me generously.
David trusted God’s character and His promises and so he knew that peace would come – it had been promised since the Garden: Review the promises --
· The serpent’s curse –
“I will put hostilitybetween you and the woman, (ie NO PEACE) and between your offspring and her offspring.[d] [“BUT”]
He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
God was hinting of doing to do something to deal with the hostility. Man had rendered it impossible to do it himself. We see throughout Scripture, most clearly through Mosaic covenant.
· To Abraham – Genesis 12:2-3
Genesis 12:2–3 (CSB)
2 I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
· To Moses (of a new Mediator) – Deuteronomy 18: 15-18
Deuteronomy 18:15–18 (CSB)
15 “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. 16 This is what you requested from the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let us not continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God or see this great fire any longer, so that we will not die!’ 17 Then the Lord said to me, ‘They have spoken well. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.
· To David – (one to establish His throne permanently) 2 Samuel 7:12-16
2 Samuel 7:12–16 (CSB)
12 When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals. 15 But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.’ ”
· Through Jeremiah – Jeremiah 31:31-33
Jeremiah 31:31–33 (CSB)
31 “Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 This one will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt—my covenant that they broke even though I am their master”—the Lord’s declaration. 33 “Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the Lord’s declaration. “I will put my teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
· Told through Isaiah 9:6-7
Isaiah 9:6–7 (CSB)
6 For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.
A child will be born for us – this fits the prophecies:
Satan (“adversary”) - Hostility between your offspring. He will strike/crush your head and you, his heal.
Abraham – All nations blessed through you (a promised son)
Moses – I will raise up a prophet like Moses
David – I will up after you your descendant
Notice: “Born for us” – Comes as a human being (born) and also a divine gift (for us). He is both God and Man.
In what way would he be our gift? He would come to establish a Kingdom of Peace. He would come to establish peace with God – the fulfillment of Jeremiah 31: the covenant would be accomplished through God, Himself. That was only possible if God was in the form of man
Nature of the King (6b)
Wonderful Counselor
“Supernatural” counselor –
we don’t get peace when we don’t seek His counsel.
Mighty God - all powerful ruler – There is nothing He can’t do.
He is able to establish peace
Everlasting Father – signifies a benevolent protector, not “THE” Father.
He is willing to establish peace
Prince of Peace – He has come to bring peace (with God) and will come against to establish and maintain a Kingdom of peace.
This is what is meant by “The government will be on his shoulders”:
the responsibility of establishing and ruling the KINGDOM will be on his shoulders; his responsibility.
ILLUS:The success or failure of a company by a new CEO is “on his shoulders”.
Jesus would be the One who comes to establish God’s Kingdom by taking on the “ruler of this world” by conquering Death and reversing the Garden curse.
This makes certain that Repentant sinners who trust in Jesus are cleansed from the effects of the curse, and brought into peace with God.
Romans 5:1–6 (CSB)
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 We have also obtained access through him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, 4 endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. 5 This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly.
THIS is a Kingdom of Peace
I love how Isaiah describes the nature of His Kingdom in 9:7 -
Vast – all nations blessed. Includes people from every tribe, nation, and tongue – the gospel is for all peoples, though all people will not receive it.
Prosperity will never end – God, Himself, will be our provider. Result: Peace
Throne of David, establishedand sustained with justice and righteousness forever. Result: Peace
Experience Peace:
Acknowledge the things that caused the knots (self-imposed)
Hand Him your knotted up life.
Keep your eyes on Jesus
Hebrews 12:1–2 (CSB)
1 Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, 2 keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
Since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, 2 keeping our eyes on Jesus,[a] the pioneer and perfecter[b] of our faith.
