Introduction

Here at Christmas time there are a countless number of sermons preached and numerous songs sung on the Incarnation of the Son of God. It is a wonderful subject to preach on and to sing about, but I am curious how many really have an understanding concerning this miracle of incarnation? I would like to share with you this evening some clear and insightful thoughts on this subject pertaining to the Eternal Son of God and the completed work of His Incarnation
The Body of Christ Prepared - (vv.5-7). The humanity of our Saviour was prepared in eternity past.
Psalm 40:6 “Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; Mine ears hast thou opened: Burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.” Psalm 40:7 “Then said I, Lo, I come: In the volume of the book it is written of me,” Psalm 40:8 “I delight to do thy will, O my God: Yea, thy law is within my heart.”
2. The Babe Christ was Prophesied - (vv.9-10). Think back with me to fall of man in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.”
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
3. The Blood of Christ Propitiated (vv.11-13). The Father accepted fully and was satisfied with the sacrifice of His Son. The wrath of God towards sin was appeased and Christ’s blood atonement rendered favorable. This is the act of Propitiation.
1 John 2:2 “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
1 John 4:10 “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
Romans 3:25 “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”
4. The Bride of Christ Perfected (vv.14-17). The redeeming work of Christ starting at His incarnation will ultimately reach its full completion at the Fetching of His Bride!
Ephesians 5:27 “That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
Revelation 21:9 “And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”

Conclusion

What was the purpose of the Incarnation? Paul gives us the answer in his letter to Timothy.
1 Timothy 1:15 “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.”
