An Open Heart-Sis. Shirley Crawford
Sister Shirley Crawford was an extraordinary lady.
She had an open heart of service and exemplified the qualities of Lydia, a woman who walked worthy of the Lord.
Lydia, the first recorded convert in Macedonia, was a trailblazer whose faith bore great fruit.
She hosted the first Christian gatherings in Philippi, establishing the first church in Europe.
Let me read her story, found in Acts 16:11-15, teaches us three key lessons:
Acts 16:11–15(ESV)
So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.

1. Commitment to Worship

Lydia's dedication to God was evident in her regular Sabbath worship, despite the discomfort of meeting by a riverside due to the absence of a synagogue in Philippi.
She prioritized worship over business opportunities, demonstrating her reverence for God.
Similarly, we are called to honor the Lord, placing Him above worldly gains and conveniences.

2. God’s Saving Power

Lydia responded to the Gospel because “the Lord opened her heart” (Acts 16:14).
Her salvation underscores God’s sovereignty and the transformative power of His Word.
It is a reminder to share the Gospel, trusting that God will open hearts in His perfect timing.

3. Fruit of Genuine Faith

Lydia’s faith led to action.
She was baptized, brought her household to faith, and extended hospitality to Paul and his team, offering her home for Christian fellowship.
Her house became the foundation of the Philippian church, a testament to her commitment to serve God and His people.

Conclusion

Like Lydia, Sister Shirley Crawford was a godly woman whose faith inspired others.
May we follow their example by walking worthy of the Lord, serving Him with our hearts and lives.
