Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Intro

This scripture is a promise that comes to a people who are in Assyrian captivity. They are at a point that seems so hopeless. Isaiah prophecies to this people the coming of a king that will deliver them from this captivity. As he is prophesying he is telling them the “names” of this king. The declaration of his names is a description of his rule. Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. It is interesting that this prophecy comes to a people that won’t actually be around for his actual arrival. I believe that this is because the ruling of Jesus, Carrying all of those names, is not just for the people then, but for the people of today.
We may not be stuck in the captivity of some foreign nation, however, we do find ourselves in need of a ruler that can deliver us from sin, and our own foolishness.

Mighty God

The name Mighty God is a reference to strength in battle. At this time period, if a king could not wage war he was nothing. The strength of a king was directly connected to his ability to protect the kingdom from the enemies that surrounded. In the case of the nation of Israel, it was a testament to God’s ability to deliver them from captivity. But just like how the names are timeless, the ability of God to deliver his people is timeless. He is still a God who delivers us from the enemy of our soul. He is the God who delivers us from our sin, and all of our other messes. Week one we talked about God’s wisdom leading us out of our messes. Now it is God’s strength that carries us.

Above all others

Psalm 95:3 ESV
3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
Isaiah 6:1 ESV
1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.

We have access to this strength

Ephesians 6:10 ESV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
Exodus 14:14 ESV
14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
Isaiah 41:10 ESV
10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Because of His Strength we have guaranteed victory

Romans 8:31–37 ESV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
God will give us all we need
No one can bring a charge against us
No one can condemn us
nothing can separate us from him and his love
