Joy has a Name

Matthew 1:18–25 CSB
The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit. So her husband, Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.” When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him. He married her but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus.
We have been talking about joy for the past few weeks.
Joy that all have access to.
Joy that is only available to those who submit to Christ.
We have been talking about joy because the promise has finally come.
Joy is not just an emotion. It is not just a gift. The greatest joy is found in the person and the name of Jesus Christ.

Is His name Jesus or Immanuel?

Matthew 1:21 (CSB)
She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:23 (CSB)
See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.”
All throughout Scripture God has various names or titles.
These are important because they tell us a lot about God and a lot about who He is.
We can at different times remember these different names and in remembering them be reminded of hope, power, love, provision, etc.
YHWH (Yahweh) / Jehovah Meaning: "I Am Who I Am" or "The Self-Existent One" Reference: Exodus 3:14 Significance: The personal, covenant name of God, emphasizing His eternal nature and faithfulness.
El Shaddai Meaning: "God Almighty" or "The All-Sufficient One" Reference: Genesis 17:1 Significance: Points to God’s power and provision.
El Elyon Meaning: "God Most High" Reference: Genesis 14:18-20 Significance: Stresses God’s supremacy over all.
El Olam Meaning: "Everlasting God" or "God of Eternity" Reference: Genesis 21:33 Significance: Highlights God's eternal nature.
YHWH Jireh (Yahweh Yireh) Meaning: "The Lord Will Provide" Reference: Genesis 22:14 Significance: Reflects God’s provision, as seen in the story of Abraham and Isaac.
YHWH Rapha (Yahweh Ropheka) Meaning: "The Lord Who Heals" Reference: Exodus 15:26 Significance: Reveals God as the healer of physical and spiritual needs.
YHWH Nissi Meaning: "The Lord Is My Banner" Reference: Exodus 17:15 Significance: Depicts God as the one who gives victory in battle.

YHWH Raah (Rohi) Meaning: "The Lord Is My Shepherd" Reference: Psalm 23:1 Significance: Depicts God as a caring and guiding shepherd.
El Roi Meaning: "The God Who Sees Me" Reference: Genesis 16:13 Significance: Reflects God’s awareness and care, as seen in Hagar’s story.
The different names or titles of God are important because in them God Himself is trying to communicate something to us.
With the exception of El Roi God names Himself.
We see these names, we can pray these names and be reminded of something.

A New Name

Here in Matthew in the beginning of the New Testament we see a new name.
Some try and treat his name like magic thinking that if they invoke it they can control it.
Some use His name like in vain to express frustration or anger.
Some don’t ever want to hear His name.
But no other name has brought more fear to the heart of darkness.
Philippians 2:10 CSB
so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth—
Acts 4:12 CSB
There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”
The name of Jesus is the greatest name ever.
His name is Jesus or Yehoshua and the name means Yahweh Saves. He is Yehoshua HaMashiach - Yahweh, the Messiah Saves.
Jesus is the modern translation of His name. This name and it does not matter the language you say it in is powerful because He is powerful. It is the most powerful name in history.
So why does the angel say His name will be Immanuel? This is a title and not a name. It means God is with us.
It is a battle cry, it changes us, and it changes everything.
When we put these together what we get is,
God saves us and He is with us
There is nothing better than understanding that God is with us.
Look back at Joseph.
Joseph was a good man but he could not believe his fiancee was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. But he did not want her to die, because that it what would have happened if people found out she was with child.
Side note, I think this is one of the reasons Joseph was chosen to be Jesus’ earthly father. He did the right things.
But after the angel reveals to him that this child is Immanuel, Yehoshua HaMashiach it changed Joseph. He woke up with passion, determination, and a new dedication.
Matthew 1:24–25 ESV
When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
When you find out who Jesus is it changes you.
Joy has a name and that joy changes you.
It does not mean you cannot have questions. Questions are fine. I have a thousand questions, but I have settled the most important one.
Does God love me, Yes Jesus proves that.
So now I have joy unspeakable. Joy in Jesus name.
Why? Because Joy has a name and His name is Jesus.
HIS NAME IS JESUS SONG
At the name of Jesus every question finds an answer
At the name of Jesus, every fear gets settled.
We have hope and that hope is called Jesus Christ.
The Messiah
The Anointed One
The Promised One
We have hope because God is with us.
God with us is the greatest thing ever. Nothing beats God with us. Nothing compares to God with us.
We have joy because God is with us.
Knowing that God is with you will change everything.
Everything changes when we know that God is with us.
No situation is too dark.
No fear rises to the hight of God with us.
The understanding that God is with us changes everything.
No other religion in the world has a God who came to be with them.
John 1:12–14 CSB
But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
In all other attempts to serve God you must do enough to reach Him, but our God demonstrates His love to us that He came down.
He stepped away from heaven to be with us.
He became what we were so we could be more than we ever could alone.
2 Corinthians 5:21 CSB
He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
He became sin and we became righteous. This is a cause for joy if there ever was one!
Joy is an emotion of the soul and spirit that gives contentment and rest.
Nothing can give your soul more rest than knowing God is with you.
