In verses 17–24, the psalmist expresses his dependence on God and His Word in the midst of affliction and opposition. This section reveals a heart that longs to know God’s truth, live by it, and find refuge in it.

The psalmist’s prayer: He acknowledges his dependence on God’s grace for life itself.
Purpose of life: Living is tied to obedience to God’s Word. He desires not just to exist but to live in a way that honors God.
Application: As Christians, our sustenance comes from God. We should pray for grace to live in obedience, recognizing that true life is found in alignment with His Word (John 6:63 “63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” )

Application: Pray for God to open your spiritual eyes each time you read His Word. Approach the Bible expecting to discover its riches (Ephesians 1:17–18 “17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,” )

"I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me."
Stranger on earth: The psalmist sees himself as a pilgrim, not fully at home in this world. His true citizenship is with God.
God’s guidance is essential: As a traveler in an unfamiliar land, he needs God’s commandments to navigate life.
Application: We are called to live as sojourners (1 Peter 2:11 “11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;” ) Let God’s Word be your guide in a world that is not your home.

An intense longing: The psalmist describes a deep, unrelenting hunger for God’s Word and His righteous judgments.
A constant need: This desire is not occasional but continual.
Application: Cultivate a thirst for God’s Word that becomes part of your daily life. Meditate on its truths day and night (Psalm 1:2 “2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; And in his law doth he meditate day and night.” )

"Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments. Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies. Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes."
Rebuking the proud: God deals with those who stray from His Word, emphasizing His justice.Facing reproach: The psalmist experiences criticism and opposition, even from the powerful, but his refuge is in God’s Word.
Meditation over distraction: Instead of retaliating, he focuses on God’s statutes.
Application: When faced with opposition or discouragement, turn to Scripture for strength. Trust God to handle those who oppose His truth (Romans 12:19 “19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” )

Source of joy: God’s Word is not merely a duty; it is a delight.
Guidance through life: The psalmist treats Scripture as his trusted counselor, providing wisdom for every decision.
Application: Develop a habit of delighting in God’s Word. See it not as a burden but as a blessing that guides and shapes your life (Psalm 37:4 “4 Delight thyself also in the Lord; And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” )
