But for charismatics, Bynum’s jumble of letters represented something far loftier. An article in the Christian Post captured the significance of her odd status updates with the title “Televangelist Juanita Bynum Raises Brows with ‘Tongues’ Prayer on Facebook.” ¹

It is only by the power of The Holy Spirit that the Gospel is proclaimed and you are able to believe it.

1. This Day of Pentecost was a special day.

a. What was Pentecost v.1

Pentecost - A Jewish festival that takes place 50 days after Passover; also known as the Feast of Weeks.

Deuteronomy 16:9–11 “9 “You are to count seven weeks, counting the weeks from the time the sickle is first put to the standing grain. 10 You are to celebrate the Festival of Weeks to the Lord your God with a freewill offering that you give in proportion to how the Lord your God has blessed you. 11 Rejoice before the Lord your God in the place where he chooses to have his name dwell—you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, the Levite within your city gates, as well as the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow among you.”

The word πεντηκοστή (pentēkostē) literally means “50th.” This festival is celebrated 50 days after the Passover. It is one of the three pilgrim feasts mentioned in the Law. The word occurs three times in the nt (Acts 2:1; 20:16; 1 Cor 16:8). In Acts 2, on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit came upon the believers who were gathered together. Under the influence of the Spirit, they went out and preached, in various languages, the gospel to those who were in Jerusalem for the feast.

When we are reminded of Pentecost think of it as the start of the new covenant church.

The Day of Pentecost was a day in the likes never again to happen. It is like the giving of the law a Mt. Sini, The Incarnation The Resurrection, or The Ascension.

2. The Holy Spirit brings comfort and power. v.2-4

Galatians 5:22–23 “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.”

Ephesians 5:15–21 “15 Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise—16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit: 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.”

3.The Proclamation of the Acts of God united the scattered nations.

They heard them speaking in their own language.

Genesis 11:9 “9 Therefore it is called Babylon, for there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the Lord scattered them throughout the earth.”

Scattered because of disobedience now they can hear and believe.

John Chrysostom explained:

  And as in the time of building the tower [of Babel] the one tongue was divided into many; so then [at Pentecost] the many tongues frequently met in one man, and the same person used to discourse both in the Persian, and the Roman, and the Indian, and many other tongues, the Spirit sounding within him: and the gift was called the gift of tongues because he could all at
