With the end of 2024 right around the corner I thought we should take a moment to discuss over the next couple of weeks something Paul wrote, inspired by God, in Romans 1:18. In talking about the need to “not be ashamed of the gospel” Paul then turns his attention to those that will incur God’s wrath, the ungodly and unrighteous. But I want us to notice what those that are ungodly and unrighteous do.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Living an ungodly and unrighteous life will by its nature seek to suppress that which expose the lies. This is why Jesus said in John 3:19-21…
19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
The great danger suppressing the truth is that we can begin to “believe the lie” and as the Hebrew writer notes, drift away.
1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
Notice those that know the truth must give earnest heed to the truth because if we don’t we will drift away, and this word for drift away is the word for a boat that is without anchor and doesn’t know it is not where it first stopped. The current has made it drift to a different spot without the boat owner even knowing it.
Truth is more important in our lives than anything else because the truth sets us free (John 8:32).
The actual truth sets us free from sin (Romans 6:7).
The actual truth sets us free from chaos and division (1 Corinthians 1:10).
The actual truth sets us free to live an eternity with God (Romans 6:22-23).
Make certain in everything you do not to be “ok” with suppressing the truth no matter how much it might hurt to hear the truth. Be set free by the truth and eventually you will spend and eternity with God.
