intro:

Wages make the world go around. I remember the first time I realized that work deserved wages. You see as a young kid about 9 years old I would “work” with my dad; I have the quotations because my version of work was to dig for half an hour (if that) and then find ways to a void doing anything the rest of the day. Now I definitely think i have developed a better work ethic since then (my old Foreman may disagree jokingly) but the point of the story is that at that point in time i did not realize that work came with wages. I thought I was just working because my dad said so but lo and behold at the end of the day my dad would take my brother and I to the glorious McDonald or Speedway for food and speedy freezes. At that moment I realized work resulted in wages. My wages being treats that I would not have had at home. But working with my dad i didn't just discover wages but i discovered what gifts can look like as well. At the end of the job the home owner gave me and my brother $90. For a 9 year old kid in the early 2000’s that was a lot of money. The Home owner had already payed my dad and this was something none of us expected. it was a gift, to me it was free and undeserved, (remember what I said about my work ethic back then.) When we look at our text we see something along the same lines. We see wages and a gift.
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
