Introduction
Matthew Henry said, “He was unsettled, had not where to lay His head, lived upon alms, was opposed and hated. He endured the contradiction of sinners against himself. His spirit was tender and he admitted the impressions of sorrow. We never read that he laughed, but often he wept.” Another commentator wrote, “he was never seen to laugh;” and so worn and macerated was he with continual grief. Our Saviour experienced extreme loneliness so we could enjoy His comfort and peace.
This evening I would like for us to study together some insights concerning the Loneliness of Jesus.
The Loneliness of Jesus may be seen in His Hour of Abandonment
a. Peter Denied Him
John 13:38 “Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.”
b. Judas Betrayed Him
John 13:21 “When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.”
Matthew 26:50 “And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.”
c. All Left Him
John 6:66 “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.”
Matthew 26:56 “But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.”
c. His Father Forsook Him
Matthew 27:46 “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
The Loneliness of Jesus may be seen in His Hour of Agony
a. The Agony of the Cup of His Sorrow
b. The Agony of the Cup of His Separation
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
The Loneliness of Jesus may be seen in His Hour of Atonement
Hebrews 1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
