The Return of The King
The Return of The King
Primary Scripture Reading: Matthew 24:29-31
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Introduction
Introduction
The Bible paints a vivid and sobering picture of the events leading up to the return of Jesus Christ. The second coming of our Lord is the culmination of God’s redemptive plan, a day when righteousness will triumph, and His eternal kingdom will be established. This sermon will outline the prophetic timeline and key events that lead to the return of Jesus, followed by His triumphant appearance in power and glory.
The Old Testament contains numerous prophecies pointing to Jesus’ second coming, emphasizing His role as the reigning King, Judge, and Restorer. Key scriptures include:
• Daniel 7:13-14: Jesus receives an eternal kingdom.
• Daniel 7:13-14: Jesus receives an eternal kingdom.
• Zechariah 14:3-4: His return to the Mount of Olives to defeat the nations.

• Isaiah 63:1-4: His judgment of the wicked.
• Isaiah 63:1-4: His judgment of the wicked.
• Isaiah 2:2-4: His establishment of peace and righteousness.
• Isaiah 2:2-4: His establishment of peace and righteousness.

• Psalm 96:13: His righteous judgment of the earth.
• Amos 9:11-15: The restoration of David’s kingdom.
• Amos 9:11-15: The restoration of David’s kingdom.
• Joel 3:12-16: His judgment in the valley of decision.
• Joel 3:12-16: His judgment in the valley of decision.
• Micah 4:3-4: A vision of global peace under His reign.

These passages affirm Jesus’ ultimate return to judge, reign, and fulfill God’s promises, calling believers to readiness and faithfulness.
I. The Days of Great Deception
I. The Days of Great Deception
Scripture: Matthew 24:4-5 (KJV)
“Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”
The end times will be marked by unparalleled spiritual deception. False prophets and false messiahs will rise, performing signs and wonders to lead many astray. This era of deception is fueled by a spirit of lawlessness and rebellion against God. Paul warns in 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 that the Antichrist will come with “all power and signs and lying wonders.”
• Application: The church must remain rooted in the truth of God’s Word and led by the Holy Spirit, discerning the times.
II. The Rise of Global Turmoil
II. The Rise of Global Turmoil
Scripture: Matthew 24:6-7 (KJV)
“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”
Wars, famines, pandemics, and natural disasters will intensify as the birth pains of the end grow closer together. These signs are not random; they are warnings that the current world order is nearing its end.
• Historical Context: The Apostle John, in the Book of Revelation, described these events as the opening of the seals (Revelation 6), each revealing a phase of divine judgment and global distress.
• Application: Believers must live in readiness, using these signs as reminders to share the gospel with urgency.
III. The Great Tribulation
III. The Great Tribulation
Scripture: Matthew 24:21 (KJV)
“For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”
The Great Tribulation is a period of severe persecution, especially against God’s people. During this time:
• The Antichrist will rise to power, enforcing worship through economic control (Revelation 13:16-17).
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
• There will be unparalleled natural disasters (Revelation 16), including scorching heat, darkness, and massive earthquakes.
• Encouragement: Daniel 12:1 reminds us that during this time, Michael the Archangel will stand for God’s people, and the faithful will shine as stars.
1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
IV. Cosmic Disturbances and the Sign of the Son of Man
IV. Cosmic Disturbances and the Sign of the Son of Man
Scripture: Matthew 24:29-30 (KJV)
“The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven.”
Before Jesus’ return, the heavens themselves will declare His coming:
• The sun and moon will be darkened, and the stars will appear to fall.
• These signs will cause great fear among the nations (Luke 21:25-26).
Then, the “sign of the Son of Man” will appear—a visible manifestation of His glory, perhaps resembling the Shekinah glory of God.
V. The Glorious Return of Jesus Christ
V. The Glorious Return of Jesus Christ
Scripture: Revelation 19:11-16
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
• The Heavenly Host: Jesus will return with the armies of heaven, clothed in fine linen, clean and white.
• The King of Kings: He will appear as the conquering King, executing judgment on the nations and defeating the Antichrist and his armies at Armageddon (Revelation 19:19-21).
VI. The Gathering of the Elect
VI. The Gathering of the Elect
Scripture: Matthew 24:31
31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
The faithful will be gathered from every corner of the earth. This moment is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise to redeem His people.
VII. Establishing the Millennial Reign
VII. Establishing the Millennial Reign
Scripture: Revelation 20:4
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
“And they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”
Jesus will establish His millennial kingdom, a reign of peace and righteousness where Satan is bound, and the nations are ruled with justice.
Conclusion
Conclusion
As we await the return of Jesus, we are called to watch and prepare. Jesus said in Matthew 24:42-44, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” His return is both a warning and a hope—a warning for the unprepared and a glorious hope for the faithful.
Call to Action

2. Live with Expectancy: Walk in holiness and readiness, knowing the Lord’s return is imminent.
3. Spread the Gospel: Use this time to share the good news with urgency.
