So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen.
The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.
And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance.
All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.
Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
In all of history and all of accounted scripture we are told God chooses humanity over and over again
No matter what humanity chooses God continues to make a way for humanity
God chose them - they chose foreign gods
God makes them great in the land of their oppression- they long after foreign gods
God delivers them and lifts them up in the dessert- they long to go back
450 years of his signs and wonders on display- they long for what others have
They ask for judges- God tells them He will be their judge… all the way up to Samuel
They ask for a king and the first one bombs
King David - a man after Gods heart… WHO WILL DO ALL MY WILL
from this branch is where the Savior will come
Must be willing to do all of the Father’s will
This one walks in the fullness of God and His Spirit
Shoot from the Stump of Jesse
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
7 Spirits are mentioned each one we are to carry with us.
Fear of the Lord is His delight… Repeat…
what is the fear of the Lord?
Most simply it is found here
He shall judge not by what HE
sees or hears
This is the work of the fear of the Lord… What it means to carry the Spirit of the fear of the Lord.
a. To not just assume what I see
physically is it…
b. To no just assume that what I hear
is it…
c. It is the work of hearing what is on
the Lord’s Heart and doing just that.
The fear of the Lord is more than just being afraid it is knowing the heart of the Father.
The fear of the Lord is more than just being afraid it is knowing the heart of the Father.
Our Foundation
Our Foundation
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Still trying to make sense what the fear of the Lord is…
it is the very beginning of all things in the Lord.
It is the work of being in awe of all that God is… all that God has done… all that God will do…
If this is not the foundation of our faith then what do we have?
It is Required of Us
It is Required of Us
“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
The fear of the Lord… this awe… this reverence… this amazement prompts us to action
Walk in all His ways… (Not yours)
Love Him…
we cannot Love what we do not know
Serve the Lord with all your Heart
Leb = yes, heart… understanding
not a half hearted service… the more I know you the more ai want to serve you
Serve the Lord with all your Soul
nepes = living being… personality… the very essence of your life.
“what is worship in spirit but your very life as a living sacrifice.”
This is the requirement for us who are now found in Christ. That we would stand in awe… reverence… amazement… at all that God is, all that He has done, all that He is doing, and all that He will do.
According to v. 20-21 we are to:
a. Serve Him
b. Hold fast to Him
c. Swear by His name
Fear of the Lord is all about Sonship
Fear of the Lord is all about Sonship
The identity that is our in Christ
More than just doing “good things because we were told to”
Do what is Good because God is good… or as 1 Peter makes clear “Be Holy because I am holy…”
Wolf dressed as a chicken… wolf housed with the chicken… or behavior modification treatment… the wolf remains a wolf.
concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh
and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Sonship is about carrying the spirit of the fear of the Lord
it becomes a part of us.
Spirit of Holiness is the work of having reverence to the Lord. It is doing what God desires… it is doing the will of God
This is what makes David so special
as it is uttered in scripture the Lord is not looking for robots instead
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
this has been God’s desire from the beginning… that we would be His people and He would be our God a statement repeated 28x in the old Testament and 5 times in the NT
IN order for this to be the case we must be willing to hear the Lord and see His heart… to move as He calls us into Himself… THIS IS THE FEAR OF THE LORD
