Personal Introduction
Background: Very likely, near the end of his life, King David wrote the familiar words of Psalm 23 which have offered comfort to so many over the centuries.
David suffered much over the course his life: the betrayal of his king whom he served so faithfully, the loss of his dear friend Jonathan, even the loss of several of His children.
But as he looked back on his life, David wrote these words reflecting on God’s faithfulness.
Psalm 23 NKJV
A Psalm of David. 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
It was God’s faithfulness that gave him hope.
Transition: And even on days like today, God’s faithfulness gives us hope as well.
Background
John 11:25 NKJV
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
Jesus is our comfort. Jesus is our hope.
1 Corinthians 15:54–56 NKJV
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

Conclusion

Today is a hard one for Lesley’s family and friends. The days ahead will be difficult as well.
But as we grieve, let us grieve with the hope of those know that Christ has overcome the grave and is faithful to save those who trust in Him.
