Lord’s Supper Notes

Introduction

What we are doing tonight is an act of obedient worship.

We practice “closed” communion. In other words, only for those who are saved, followed in believers baptism, and have become a member of this local body of believers.

We are partaking of elements that represent the body and blood of Jesus (unleavened bread & wine).

1) What/Who Are We Remembering?

A. What we are remembering actually happened

Acts 13:30-31 “But God raised him from the dead: And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.”

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

B. What we are remembering was a sacrifice of sovereign love

Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

1 Peter 1:19-21 “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.”

C. We are remembering a Savior who took on flesh

John 1:14 KJV 1900

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The same flesh we are celebrating this very season!

The same flesh was wrapped in swaddling clothes.

The same flesh comforted the broken hearted.

The same flesh who healed multitudes.

The same flesh who fulfilled God’s holy law.

The same flesh who served others above Himself.

The same flesh was mocked, forsaken, beaten, bruised, wiped, lashed, stabbed, crucified, and experienced the wrath you deserved.

The same flesh who granted you forgiveness, grace, mercy, long suffering, healing, your needs, is coming again for you one day.

Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane if there would be another way…THERE WAS NO OTHER WAY.

D. What we are remembering is a once and for all gift of grace

Hebrews 9:12 “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

You and I gave God our worst and He gave us His best!!!

1 John 2:2 “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

2) We must examine ourselves

1 Corinthians 11:26-32 “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.” (KJV 1900)

3) Read, Pray over elements, and distribute

Matthew 26:26-30 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.”
