Question: What does it mean to be a man?
Group Discussion
Group Discussion
Question: Why do you think so many men struggle with passivity?
Passivity
Passivity
“It is not only the things a man does that can have a damaging effect on others; more often, it is what a man fails to do that causes the greatest harm.”
John Stuart Mill said, “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.”
Question: What are some ways that doing nothing could harm a man, his family, his church, or his community? Have you seen the effects of passivity in your life? If so, how?
Question: What are some common reasons we might be tempted to act passively? How can our faith empower us to overcome these temptations and take action?
The Assault
The Assault
“Our churches, our families, our nation, and even our lives are constantly under attack. Although we know that, we do not act as if it is true. We so often live as if we are in a time of peace, when in reality, we are in a time of war.“
Ephesians 6:10–12 “Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.”
Question: In what ways do you see the demonic assault of the enemy on men/our own lives? What about in our churches, families, and our nation?
Subtle Assault: “Many men who would never stand back and watch their wives or children be physically assaulted will stand by while they are being spiritually assaulted.”
Examples of the Subtle Assault of Passivity:
You are struggling with pornography. You resist community and Christian friendship. Instead, you begin to isolate yourself.
You have a problem with anger that is destroying your family, but you keep it a secret and the problem grows.
You have an argument with your wife. You feel the hurt and resentment grow. But instead of dealing with it, you ignore it.
You see ethical issues at work, but you look the other way.
You hear your children talk back to your wife, but you do nothing.
Your daughter is pushing the limits in what is acceptable to wear, but you would rather let her leave the house wearing inappropriate clothes than deal with it.
Your teenage children don’t like going to church, so you let them decide.
There is gossip and division in the church, but you fail to respond for the good of the church.
Question: Are there any situations in life in which your inaction is causing problems?
Kingdom Authority
Kingdom Authority
Titus 2:15 “Proclaim these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.”
Kingdom authority is the right and responsibility to act and rule under the king, on behalf of the king, and for the king. (Matthew 28:18-20 & Acts 1 :8)
Authority is most often abused is men try to walk in authority without walking under authority.
Question: What does abuse of authority look like? What does it lead to?
Walking Under Authority: To walk under authority means to walk in complete submission to Jesus. this is your daily disposition; we are ready, willing, and eager to be radically obedient to Jesus.
Passivity is refusing to live as if you are under the control of Jesus Christ. It is acting as if you are your own man with no regard to the fact that you exist for Jesus. Passivity is not just a bad habit; it is rebellion against God.
If you live under the authority of Jesus and under the control of the Spirit, your expression of authority will always manifest the life of God.
Walking In Authority: Being sensitive to the call of Jesus and aggressive in our obedience to Jesus. We Walk in Authority…
By Standing
Question: What does it mean to walk in authority by standing?
By Leading
Question: What does it mean to walk in authority by leading?
By Protecting
Question: What does it mean to walk in authority by protecting?
How To Walk: Hunter Vs The Lion
How To Walk: Hunter Vs The Lion
1 Peter 5:8–9 “Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.”
Question: What does the image of a lion teach us about the assault of Satan?
Peter’s use of imagery is interesting. He chooses a lion as a picture of how Satan wants to devour us, because lions are brilliant and fierce hunters. The imagery reveals how dangerous the enemy is. He knows how to hunt and devour. The reality of this demonic lion should make us vigilant.

Attitude: 1 Peter 5:8–9

Actively Resisting / Firm In The Faith (oppose and set against/ unshakeable and solid stance founded on an unshakeable ground)
Weapons: Ephesians 6:14–18
Sword of The Spirit- Word of God
Prayer in the Spirit
Question: When we are told to take our stand, what does that mean practically?
