Laws of Faith

We live to know Him and make Him known:

We want you to have one on one and daily encounters with God
Spending time with God daily should be our number one goal every day
If you feel stuck or you lack momentum try meeting with God daily
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
We have to seek
Others cannot seek for you
We make Him known
Someone’s eternity is attached to you
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Obedience is Faith
Obedience pleases the Lord
Why I believe God chose Mary
We talked about the small town of Nazareth (the birthplace of Jesus)
The town of Sepphoris (to the north of Nazareth)
Mary’s birthplace
Possibly where she met Joseph as he worked in town
This week I want us to Focus on Joseph
Why was Joseph chosen to be the stepdad of Jesus
Matthew lays out the long lineage of Joseph
Matthew 1:16 NKJV
16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
It’s important to note that Matthew’s gospel show’s Joseph’s genealogy
According to traditional Jewish law, a person’s Jewish status is passed down through the mother.
The tribal affiliation was passed down by the Father
This enabled Jesus to be by birth of Mary apart of the Jewish lineage by birth
But also by Law being legally Joseph’s he was an heir to the throne of David by the tribe of Judah
This connection is significant for several reasons
. The tribe of Judah is one of the twelve tribes of Israel,
Descended from Jacob’s fourth son, Judah. Judah was blessed by his father Jacob with the promise that the scepter would not depart from his line (Genesis 49:10)
. This prophecy is often interpreted as foretelling the kingship of the line of David, from which Jesus is a direct descendant.
Hence Joseph living in Nazareth:
Which means root or offshoot
It’s believed that nazareth housed a lot of the direct descendants of King David
We don’t know a lot about Joseph’s himself but I’ll fill you in on what we do
Matthew 13:55 NKJV
55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?
So we know he was a carpenter
He’s married to Mary and Jesus’ stepdad
Jesus had brothers and sisters
So Mary is no longer a virgin as some people still think
I want to expand on the idea of Joseph being a carpenter
For some reason religion wants to paint this picture that Jesus grew up as a poor carpenters son
I do not believe this is the case
Tekton:
a worker in wood, a carpenter, joiner, builder
a ship's carpenter or builder
any craftsman, or workman
Greek tekton means a craftsman or builder in wood, stone or metal.
Most likely He was a stone mason
This is the ruins of Sepphoris
The ornament of Galilea
Picture
This place was a booming town
On the cutting edge of technology and architecture
Joseph is most likely working on the expansion of the city taking place as Jesus is growing up
Mark 6:3 NKJV
3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.
The Carpenter: probably meaning he’s a reputable builder
I think Joseph is probably a desirable builder for that area:
He’s the guy
Isn’t that the guy that build that crooked deck for my nephew?
If you’re a christian in business or really any job you do you’re representing Christ
Be a person of good reputation
Bad building Pictures
I don’t think Him and Jesus were just hammering nails and doing shoddy work all over the place
I think Joseph was a master at His craft
He could’ve been a construction manager
A designer or
Chief overseer
At the very least he was a hard worker and was good at his job
Please think about this reasonably:
If God was going to give someone the greatest assignment that had ever been given
Don’t you think he would choose someone who was good at managing himself, his family including his own money?
Jesus’ building references:
Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Mark 12:10 NKJV
10 Have you not even read this Scripture: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone.
1 Peter 2:5 NKJV
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Just as Jesus learned the art of building and construction growing up
He spent his ministry building the spiritual church as well
Let’s go back to the beginning:
Matthew 1:18–19 NKJV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
They were betrothed to be married
a year process where Mary lives with His family
Legally binding process of betrothed
He prepares a house
For a year until their wedding feast
He’s got big plans
If he wanted to he could’ve had Mary stoned to death when he found out she was pregnant
What do you do when your plans are interrupted?
Can you distance yourself from your emotions and make righteous decisions?
6 Things that made Joseph called of God
1. Joseph was a Just man
Being a Just man
Dik-i-yos: righteous, observing divine laws
in a wide sense, upright, righteous, virtuous, keeping the commands of God
1 John 1:9 NKJV
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
2. He’s Compassionate
Instead of having his best interest in mind he puts Mary’s best interest before HIs own
Jesus was tough but often moved with compassion
Proverbs 4:26 says, “Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.” I
t’s good to meditate on our decisions
Matthew 9:36 NKJV
36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
3. Joseph was sensitive to the voice of God
There are six times God spoke by dreams in the New Testament.
Joseph had four of them (Matthew 1:20; 2:13, 19, and 22)
Jesus was senstiv
4. Joseph was immediately Obedient
Matthew 1:24 NKJV
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,
Every time you see Joseph getting a command from God He does what God says
5. Joseph trusted in God
Matthew 2:13–15 NKJV
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
Think about this:
Joseph’s family
Friends
No job
no place to live
Magi gift probably paid for their trip
1 John 2:3–6 NKJV
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
Our Obedience brings glory to the Father
Probably talking about Sepphoris here:
Matthew 5:13–16 NKJV
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
That they may see your good works
Weak people seek pleasure
Strong people chase purpose
6. Joseph was a spiritual Leader of His family:
Luke 2:41–42 NKJV
41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.
Joseph was a husband, father and laymen.
In all of Scripture you never hear a word from Joseph
He doesn’t have one speaking part in the play
Never said anything in any of scripture just does what God tells him to do
It doesn’t say how he died
He doesn’t get a cool father’s day gift from anyone
He just does His job, raises His family
Saints disappear into the mission of the church
Joseph being a just man:
Just man: used of him whose way of thinking, feeling, and acting is wholly conformed to the will of God, and who therefore needs no rectification in the heart or life
Obedience is Faith:
Luke 22:42 NKJV
42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
Just as Joseph was obedient to God
Jesus obeyed to the death on the cross
Beau: Jesus have it all
Where do you need to be obedient in your life?
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Sinners Prayer:
Father God, I give you my life
I give you my heart, I give you my all
I repent today for my past
I thank you my sins are forgiven
I believe in Jesus and that he died on the cross and rose again
I make you the Lord and Savior of my life
I love you God
In Jesus name amen
