The Joy of His Presence: Finding Delight in Christmas

Bible Passage: Psalm 16:11

Summary: Psalm 16:11 highlights the joy that comes from being in the presence of God, emphasizing that true joy is found in Him.
Application: This sermon can help Christians and others understand that the distractions of the season can overshadow the true source of joy, which is a deep relationship with God. By focusing on His presence, we can overcome feelings of loneliness or stress that often accompany the holiday season.
Teaching: The sermon will teach that joy is not merely a feeling or a temporary happiness, but a sustained contentment that stems from our faith in God and His goodness. It encourages believers to seek out and cherish the presence of God during the Christmas season.
How this passage could point to Christ: The theme illustrates the fulfillment found in Christ, who invites us into a deeper relationship with God. In Him, we experience the ultimate joy and are reconciled to the Father, who provides joy beyond circumstances.
Big Idea: True joy is found in the presence of God, and during Christmas, we are reminded to focus our hearts and lives on Him to experience this profound joy.
Recommended Study: As you prepare for this sermon, consider digging into the Hebrew terms used in Psalm 16:11 through your Logos library to better understand the nuances of 'joy' and 'presence.' It might also be insightful to explore cross-references in the New Testament where this joy in God's presence is echoed, particularly in how Jesus fulfills this promise. Consider studying how different translations frame these concepts, as well as historical and cultural contexts that illuminate the psalmist's understanding of joy.
INTRODUCTION

1. Path to Joy Revealed

Psalm 16:11a
1. The path of life is revealed to us by the word of God and the love of Christ.
So the question is how has this path of life been revealed. What exaclty reveals the path of life to us.
Sunday school anwser, its Jesus. John 14:5–6 ““Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus has revealed to us the path of life and its him. But how exactly to you follow Jesus, how exaclty do we walk in this path of life.
2. Love is the path of life
Jesus tells us how to in John 15:9–12 ““As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you.”
The path of life is revealed to us by Gods word, and his love shown to us in Jesus.
When we walk this path, when we love one another then Joy is made available to us.
the path of life is love and the reward is Joy.

2. The Presence of Joy

Psalm 16:11b
1. christmas is a reminder of the presence of God
in the presence of God is abundant Joy. this is especially relevant to us in the christams season.
Through Jesus Christ coming to earth as a child, living a sinless life, dying the death we deserve. Through the gospel we have the oppourtunity to live in the presence of God. through the Gospel we now have abundant Joy. through Jesus coming to earth and dying for us we have abundant Joy.
What does it mean to liVe in the presence of God. it means to have Joy. when you are walking that path of life joy is right there in your grasp.
King David the writer of this psalm wrote this without having seen Jesus come, he wrote this without having christmas to remind him of the joy of Christ, how much more confidence can we have in this joy knowing that Christ has fufilled this promise to us.
APP:
On this side of the Cross we can rest assured that this promise of abundant Joy in the presence of Jesus is available to us at all times. Christmas should a reminder of this. Everytime you hear the nativity story, everytime you sing silent night, everytime you see decorations lighting up the homes on your street. all of this should be a reminder of the joy have because of the birth of Jesus.
Joy to the world the Lord has come.
Joy to the world Jesus died and rose again.
Joy to the world Eteranl life is ours.

3. The Root of Joy

Psalm 16:11c
1. the universe and eternal pleasures
The last promise to us in this this verse is that we will have eternal pleasures. I want you to think about the word eternal thats used here.
ILL:
There are 200 billion trillion stars in our observable galaxy. over 700 quintillion planets in the universe. the universe as we know it is 93 billion light years in diameter. Thats only what we know of, scientists dont know if the universe is just really big or eteranlly ongoing. you might be wondering why this matters.
So think about the all those stars and planets, all those galaxies, everything beyond our sky. the countless more planets, stars, and galaxies that are yet to be discovered, none of those things are comparable to the eternal pleasures we will have through Jesus.
2. the promise of our joy.
The same God who put all those stars in the sky, and put all those planets there, the God who knwos the depth of the universe, that smae God promises pjoy beyond that. The promsie of eternal pleasures is the same promsie of eternal life.
That is where our joy comes from, the promse of eternity with Jesus, the promsie of pleasures and blessings more vast than the stars in the sky.

CONCLUSSION

No matter how lost you feel, the path of life has been revealed to you.
No matter the hurt and brokness you feel, eternal joy is offered to you.
No matter how broken and chaotic this world gets, eternal pleasures is the hope that keeps you going.
