Where Is Jesus?
Where Is Jesus?
Summary: This theme explores the societal and personal rejection of Jesus, examining how contemporary culture often leaves Him out in various aspects of life.
Application: This sermon challenges Christians to reflect on their own lives and the extent to which they prioritize Jesus amidst distractions and cultural norms. It prompts an evaluation of how to actively include Him in everyday decisions and relationships.
Teaching: The sermon teaches that there is a pervasive tendency in society to push Jesus aside, and it emphasizes the importance of recognizing His rightful place in our hearts and lives.
How this passage could point to Christ: In Scripture, Christ is continually portrayed as the cornerstone that was rejected (Psalm 118:22, Matthew 21:42). This theme invites us to consider how our hearts and society can be places where Jesus is welcome.
Big Idea: The absence of Jesus in our lives and society stems from neglect, and we must consciously create space for Him, recognizing His authority and love.
Recommended Study: Consider utilizing Logos to delve into biblical instances of rejection, such as the Gospels and the Old Testament prophecies. Look for historical and cultural contexts surrounding Jesus' rejection, including the implications of His being 'despised and forsaken' (Isaiah 53:3). You could also examine commentaries on how this theme of rejection plays out in modern contexts.
1. No Room at the Inn
1. No Room at the Inn
Luke 2:1-7
You could discuss how even from birth, Jesus experienced rejection, as there was no room for Him at the inn. This illustrates how often society can be so preoccupied with its own concerns that it overlooks the most important presence—Jesus. Encourage your audience to reflect on areas in their own lives where they might be too busy or distracted to make room for Christ. Perhaps, like the innkeeper, we too can open our lives to accommodate Jesus.
2. Unrecognized and Unwelcome
2. Unrecognized and Unwelcome
John 1:10-11
Perhaps explore how Jesus, the Creator of the world, was not recognized by His own. This passage highlights a profound truth about human nature and the tendency to miss the divine amidst the ordinary. Encourage your listeners to open their eyes to see Jesus in their everyday lives, against the backdrop of a world that often fails to acknowledge Him. Inspire them to be like the few who welcomed Him and made Him their own.
3. Invitation to Open Doors
3. Invitation to Open Doors
Revelation 3:20
Encourage the congregation to heed Jesus' invitation as He stands at the door and knocks, waiting for us to open. This passage calls for personal introspection—have we heard Him knocking, and have we let Him in? This is a personal and immediate challenge to open our lives to Christ's presence and communion. Offer the hope that no matter the past rejection, Jesus always offers another chance for relationship.
