Psalm 34
Today we will learn about the great exchange that takes place in our lives. This is concerning Lordship of our lives.
There is no time where we will ever rule over our lives- If it is not God then it is Sin that rules us.
If you do not know by now I hope you do that we are able to live righteously by our faith in Jesus.
These verses now declare what occurs when we have placed our faith and walk through life and we are faced with life change.
God has made a way for a great exchange to happen in your life
You aren't able to do it- Why cant I do it- Why do I need God?
These following verses help you and I not only realize the truth of our sinful nature but also continues to further communicate why we need this redeeming work of Christ.
Last week we looked at the question shall we sin in order that grace may abound?
Discipleship- What is it meant for- to make someone better- no
To increase your status with God- No
It answers the question of do you love God and if so do you love others
1. The Exchange of availability Vs 12-14
God’s favor
These verse continue from verse 11 of chapter 6
Reckoned faith is acting in faith knowing what is true
When we walk in Faith how do we confront the realty of Sin
Sin is true-
VS 12
Know that Sin does not have to reign in your life
It is good to hear it- the world might tell us other wise in really creative ways
It is about self
Self glory
Self preservation
When we have the focus of self glory and self preservation then we are allowing sin to reign in our life.
Now it is one thing to say sin does have to reign in your life but knowing how it doesn
is vital as well.
Because of Christ Sin does not have to reign in your life
This is the call here, do not let it reign or you will obey its lusts
Obey its Lusts- evil craving n. — an inordinate, self-indulgent craving (that displaces proper affections for God).
When sin reigns we will obey its lusts- There is no room for God first and foremost He will not share Himself
Romans 1:24 “Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.”
and we are not led by the spirit to worship God and give him his glory- we will find that our affections or gratitude come from what sin offers.
Mark 4:19 “but the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.”
VS 13
Know our lives are to be lives of surrender
Present- is to make available
Death leads to unrighteousness
Satan desires your death, for you even to stay in it
Lack of faith-,
God can’t use my situation
I am to far gone
I have sinned far to much
I like my life way to much there can never be a greater way to live
All of these are the continual presenting of your self pity for the enemy to hang onto
Instruments— If he can use it he will- it is amazing the impact our sin has not only on us but how it is used on others. tool/weapon
Know that you are now in communion with God that He has brought you out of that death
John 11:26 “and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?””
Present- surrender, available
when things get tough
Instruments- The impact we have on others for God’s glory
VS 14
Know that you have done nothing
Through Christ we know that we can do nothing and He has done it all!
John 1:17 “For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.”
Sin comes from the very notion of doing something outside of the will of God
It starts small- then it masters you
Small sins- as it masters you more and more is capable
We look around the world and we see whats going on, it is because we are wanting to do something we were never intended to do. We were made to worship God
Sin has no power to master your life, you are in communion with Jesus
it had no power over Him, nor shall it have over us when we ask the Holy Spirit to come upon us
It will try though- do you feel weak today with the temptations of Sin- it is trying to master you
Will you today call upon the name of the Lord
Titus 2:11–12 “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,”
When we forget this gift is free
you do not need to earn it
It is out of the gift that we respond
we do not need to do something for God
we can bring nothing He has everything
What we do is out of honor and knowing He alone is worthy
Grace- God’s unmerited favor!
The God of all creation has given us favor through His son!
How can sin not be a master over us because it has no power, it is powerless because of the cross and resurrection.
2. The Exchange of submission 15-16
Freedom
VS 15-16
Submission declares who rules your life
The question is now presented that we are free and therefore should we continue to sin therefore because we are free from its power?
Of course not, here again lies the question who will you submit to.
Romans 8:13 “for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
This is a daily ask a daily request who will we obey!
We are secure in our Salvation-
Daily you will have a choice of surrender
One leads to a pleasing, God honoring daily life
Imagine the possibilities of Faith
One leads to death-
Death of Faith, Death of Trust in God
Death of ourselves spiritually
God has great daily things for us.
Who will you surrender too
Who rules your life today?
We all want to say Jesus- just for a second let us look within
Have we allowed our daily submission to turn to a weekly one.
You don’t have to do this alone- I keep stressing stop making you life so busy you don’t have time to be discipled.
3. The Exchange of Rulership VS 17-20
VS 17-22
VS 17
Submission gives life beyond what we deserve
We were/ are men and women who were slaves to sin
God in His goodness and love changed everything
Submission to God is possible by what He has done
This is a great verse that tells us that we do not need to wash our selves God does the work
Do you find yourself thinking you must be clean, there is a response it isn't out works but faith
There is a standard to Christian life that the Romans would have come to know- It is one that we must come to know as well.
This standard is built out of the grace of God
Fellowship:
Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.”
Teaching and fellowship: devoted, continually
Acts 2:42 “They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
VS 18-19
From Being a Slave to Sin to a Slave of Righteousness
There is no middle ground
One will rule your life- now we cannot confuse this with sanctification- God working things out.
We learn to be lead by the spirit when confronted with Sin
Psalm 4:1–8 “Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Be gracious to me and hear my prayer. O sons of men, how long will my honor become a reproach? How long will you love what is worthless and aim at deception? Selah. But know that the Lord has set apart the godly man for Himself; The Lord hears when I call to Him. Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And trust in the Lord. Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?” Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord! You have put gladness in my heart, More than when their grain and new wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.
Being set free in order that we no longer have to try and fail it is by faith that we can do what God desires for us.
What pleases God- life of faith
I want to remind you that you have had great victories of faith in your life. God is continually calling us to live by faith.
Think about how you have gotten here, God brought you and you responded in faith.
You have been freed from it my dear friends but it is is trying to keep you dead.
VS 20
Free from the Bondage of Sin
The Prodigal Son
Thought there was true freedom in what the world has to offer.
When did he find true freedom? When he yeilded to His father
Great example he had all the freedom but was enslaved by His sin
This is what is so great for those who are unbelievers- why do we get the message out why do we serve why do we have church- Because of what God has done.
This is also a great message for believers who think that we are missing out, true freedom is only found in yielding to the Father
Sin holds no power over anyone, it is us who desired to be ruled by it. We are unwilling to surrender.
4. The Exchange of production VS 21-23
Sin produces shame and freedom and faith produce fruit
Fruit
The life we live will contain its payment (vs 23)
We view this verse as a call to unbelievers but we must apply this to our lives as believers as well
Look at Samson, God called him yet he would not let go of His desire for His sinful lusts. Where did it lead him to death.
God is gracious! Be mindful of that and turn from your lusts.
Nothing is new under the sun- Oh it was that with Samson but not me- Die to your pride!
How does God produce fruit in our lives as believers well we have our direction from Hebrews chapter 12.
Hebrews 12:5–11 “and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, Nor faint when you are reproved by Him; For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives.” It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.”
Oh no you walked in maybe excited to her a message that God will give me what I want.
But God loves you!
He disciplines us.
You dont want to be disciplined- yet God doesn't stop His mighty work. He is always giving you and me times to surrender. I pray that we do not come to the end of our lives without surrendering to his work
It is so we produce fruit- yes others will benefit but Its not for them- God has for them what He has.
It is all about God, you and I are not here to pack this place out, If God wants to He will, but in His timing. Don’t be discouraged today. God has who he has here and He always will.
But let us also take into account that if you and I reject the disciplining of God, we will be an unfruitful church.
Even if there is one- then mighty things God is doing
Application:
How do we apply this message on the Great Exchange
Know God’s Favor has made a way for us.
Know that you are free from the enslavement from Sin
Know that God is working in your life to produce fruit
