26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” 29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” 34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Theme of Christmas: The King has come. Jesus is King!
King for all Seasons, not just Christmas
Story: We decorated our house last week.
Good News, Mary received it.. today I give you good news through the Gospel.
What is the Gospel? I’ll start with what the Gospel is not.
The Gospel is Not About You! (talk) (Christmas is not about us)
The Gospel is King Jesus!
Jesus is King!
1. Jesus is the King Who Redeems Our Humble Past.
2. Jesus is the King Who Reigns Over Challenges of Our Present
3. Jesus is the King Who Restores Hope for Our Future
1. Jesus is the King Who Redeems Our Humble Past.
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
God Chooses Humility:
Nazareth was an insignificant town (in fact a town seen in a negative light, “can anything good come from Nazareth?”-Nathanael), and Mary was an ordinary young woman. If she was any different or superior from any other Jewish girl, she would have told the angel: “Well, it’s about time!”
Yet, God chose this humble setting for His work, demonstrating that His power is perfected in humility.
27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,
You may have a humble past… Mary’s blessedness is because of God Who chose her..
28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
We have no blessedness of our own. Jesus can turn the simplest most humble place into one that is so beautiful and glorious.
Consider how God used a stable and manger for Jesus’ birth, showing that greatness is not tied to worldly status but to divine purpose.
29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
troubled - same word as perplexed.. it is because of the visitation from a heavenly being — we are so humble and undeserving. The world has likewise been visited by God on the first Christmas.
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Calming words: Do not be afraid (talk) - people are afraid this season..
Favor with God Dispells Fear.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
The angel declares that Mary will name her son Jesus (YESHUA), which means "God saves." This points to His mission to redeem humanity from sin and its consequences. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus provides forgiveness and restoration, reconciling us to God and erasing the shame of our past (Colossians 1:13-14).
Application: Trust in Christ’s ability to heal and redeem even the most broken parts of your history.
God often works through humble circumstances and people to accomplish His extraordinary plans. Are we willing to embrace humility and trust God to use us for His purposes?
2. Jesus is the King Who Reigns Over Challenges of Our Present
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Future to Mary - but this is our present reality - Jesus is King!
The angel proclaims Jesus as the Son of the Most High, who will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingship is not only future but actively present in the hearts of believers.
Think of the disruption in Mary’s life - betrothed to Joseph and about to be married to him. (talk of the circumstances around it)
As King, Jesus empowers us to live under His rule, guiding our lives with peace, justice, and purpose
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Application: Submit to His reign daily, letting His priorities shape your decisions and actions.
In a world filled with uncertainty (drones), Jesus remains the steadfast hope for all who trust in Him. Are we living with the assurance that He reigns today and will ultimately make all things right?
Christmas calls us to marvel at the beauty of God’s plan and reflect on His nearness to us through Christ. Do we celebrate the profound love of God revealed in Jesus?
Are we living as citizens of Christ’s Kingdom, submitting to His rule and proclaiming His reign to the world? Advent is a time to reflect on His first coming and anticipate His return.

Is your Present Reality the Kingship of Jesus? What are your mornings like.. Instagram (posting can be positive “Good morning world”, or negative: I can’t get off my bed this morning”, FB, Youtube — or do you seek an audience with your King?
What did I say about the Gospel earlier? “It is not about you!”
3. Jesus is the King Who Restores Our Future
Specifically, restores hope for the future.
34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
Mary must be thinking… but God has already predetermined the future. Poor Mary and poor Joseph, they are in the middle of an engagement.. and this happens..…SCANDAL.
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Mary must be overwhelmed at this point with all what is about to happen to her.
But GIIC - God is in control.
36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
Wow Elizabeth my cousin? She is past child bearing age! God helps Mary absorb all these things.
God’s Orchestration - Jesus is King and His Kingship is eternal.
This eternal Kingdom guarantees the restoration of all things, where righteousness and peace will fully prevail.
4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” 5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
I like the American Standard Bible’s version of this:
37 For no word from God shall be void of power.
The assurance that "nothing will be impossible with God" underscores His power to fulfill His promises for the future
God specializes in making the impossible possible—bringing hope to hopeless situations, healing to broken hearts, and light to darkness.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Are there “impossible” situations in our lives where we need to trust God’s power? Advent reminds us that God’s greatest miracle was sending His Son into the world to redeem humanity.
I believe that in the impossibility of your situation today, God is setting you up for a miracle!
What do you think is impossible? Healing? A financial provision? Change in a person? Salvation of someone?
Share a testimony of satanist woman I heard the story about online. (show the Josh McDowell book) There are no coincidences with God (twin).
Application: Live with hope and confidence, knowing that Christ will restore all creation and make all things new.
These points highlight Jesus as the King who transforms every dimension of our lives—our past through redemption, our present through His reign, and our future through restoration.
Important Reflection: We tend to have a man-centered focus on our study of Christmas, yes God redeems our humble past, Reigns over our present , and restores hope in our future but Christ coming is not about us — Christmas is ALL ABOUT GOD! Jesus is King.
Call to Action:
This Christmas, let us embrace the hope of Christ, trust in His power to do the impossible, and live as citizens of His Kingdom. Just as Mary responded with faith and submission, saying, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38), may we surrender our lives to the reigning King and share His hope with the world.
38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Prayer for folks.
