Romans

Study #6

Ø      Sin

Ø      Salvation (5:1–21)

Ø      Sanctification (6–8—Righteousness Imparted)

o        Our new position in Christ (6)

o        Our new problem in the flesh (7)

o        Our new power in the Spirit (8)[1]

Ø      Chapter 6 deals with the believer being dead to sin;

Ø      Chapter 7 deals with the believer being dead to the Law;

Ø      Chapter 8 deals with the believer being alive in Spirit;

All three chapters are an explanation of 5:17.

“17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. [2] .”

Ø      Chapter 6 tells us how sin no longer reigns over us (6:12);

Ø      Chapter 7 explains how the Law no longer reigns over us (7:1);

Ø      Chapter 8 explains how the indwelling Spirit gives us life and liberty (8:2–4).

Two problems:

  1. How can I achieve victory over the old nature (the flesh, the body of sin)?
  2. How can I live so as to please God?

Ø      Chapter 6 answers the first question: we get victory over the old nature by realizing that we have been crucified with Christ.

Ø      But the second question is more complex; for how can I please God when everything I do—even the “good things”—is tainted by the old nature? Sin is not simply an outward action; it also involves inward attitudes and dispositions. Chapter 7 answers this problem (along with chapter 8) by showing that the Christian is dead to the Law and that the Spirit fulfills the righteousness of the Law in us (8:4).

Personal Testimony of Romans 6

Illustration of Emancipation Proclamation-

The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order by United States President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War, which declared the freedom of all slaves in the territory of the Confederate States of America that had not already returned to Union control. Issued in September 1862, the order became effective on January 1, 1863.

Study #6

  1. Know (6:1–10)

            Emancipation message-

a.      The Fact of slavery- Eph 2:1-2

b.      The Fact of deliverance -Rom. 6:5-9

c.      The Hope of Eternal Life -Rom. 6:23

  1. Count (6:11)

Emancipation response-

It is not enough merely to know our new position in Christ; we must, by faith, reckon it to be true in our own individual lives. Reckoning is simply that step of faith that says, “What God says about me in the Bible is now true in my life.

    1. Faith is Intellectual

    1. Faith is Dynamic
  1. Yield (6:12–23) Emancipation result-

If believers truly reckon themselves dead to sin, then they will prove their faith by yielding themselves to God. This is step three in the process of getting victory over the old nature, the flesh. Notice that stern “Let not!” in v. 12. This yielding is an act of our own wills, a step of obedience to the Lord. It is not enough to know this wonderful doctrine, or even reckon on it; we must take this final step of yielding the members of our bodies to Christ.[3]

    1. The result is a once and for all determination

    1. The result is a daily demonstration (Rom 12:1)
