Mary
Mary
And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
Luke Elizabeth and Mary Meet (1:39–56)
What God has done for Mary anticipates and models what God will do for the poor, the powerless, and the oppressed of the world, the central theme of the second movement of the song, the triumph of God’s purposes for all people everywhere (vv. 50–55).
In Mary’s song: Also known the world over at the Magnificat we find three things that God is going to do through Christ.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
—> Christianity is the death of pride.
—> because if people see their lives beside that of Christ, it tears away the last vestiges of their pride.
—> We can see ourselves for who we truly are. The parts of our lives that we have tried to keep hidden are put on display once the light of light, the light of Christ enters into our lives.
—> This is the first work of Christ in our lives.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
—> Christianity brings about social change.
—> Christianity puts an end to the world’s labels and prestige.
—> When we have realized what Christ did for each and every one of us, it is no longer possible to regard anyone as being beneath us.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
—> A non-Christian society is a society where people are out for as much as they can get. A Christian society is a society where no one dares to have too much while others have too little, where everyone must get only to give away.
