Introduction
In our mini series Christ throughout eternity we looked at the preincarnate Christ and the birth of Christ. Today we look at the Death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. To die on calvary is the reason why Jesus came into our world. While we are born and want to live, Christ’s express purpose for being born was to ultimately die as the atoning sacrifice for the world.
Verse 2
Jesus knew when He came
He would suffer in shame
He could feel ev'ry pain and sorrow
But He left Paradise
With His blood He paid the price
My redemption to Jesus I owe
Chorus
Born to die upon Calv'ry
Jesus suffered my sin to forgive
Born to die upon Calv'ry
He was wounded that I might live
Verse 3
From His throne Jesus came
Laid aside heaven's fame
In exchange for the cross of Calv'ry
For my gain suffered loss
For my sin He bore the cross
He was wounded and I was set free
1. The Predictions of Christ’s death
1. The Predictions of Christ’s death
Explanation:
The reason Christ came was to redeem us from our sins. The reason there could be such a birth is because Christ is God and God is control of human history. Nearing the end of Christ’s earthly ministry Christ really shared with his disciple on three specific occasions of his purpose.
The way the verses and chapters are numbered in Mark I find it easier if to remember their references. Chapters 8, 9, 10 and verse 31, 31, 32-34. These allow for quick reference in the situation some one might doubt Christ’s predictions.
Three primary predictions
Mark 8:31 “And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.”
Mark 9:31 “For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.”
Mark 10:33–34 “Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.”
Christ also predicted his crucifixion in the Gospel of John.
John’s Allusions
John 3:14 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:”
John 8:28 “Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.”
John 12:32–33 “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die.”
Argue:
Who do you know who can predict their own suffering, death, and resurrection.
Delivered by Whom; The elders, scribes, chief priests.
Executed by whom: The Gentiles.
The means of execution: Crucifixion
Risen by when: The third day
This can be nothing but supernatural. We have a God who came down to us for the express purpose of redeeming lost and stubborn humanity from their sin.

First and foremost, he fulfilled their messianic predictions.

Apply:
While I may not be able to predict my death and how it will happen. I am to be purposed to be crucified with Christ in a spiritual sense. Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
God wants to be purposed to do all God desires of me regardless of the cost as Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:8 “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Am I willing to die to self that others might come to Christ.

God are there any responses I have that could ruin my Christian witness.

God are there any conveniences that I enjoy every day that would keep from being the witness I should be.

Would others predict you’d be willing to die for someone or something? If so, what would it be?
2. The Passion of Christ.
2. The Passion of Christ.
Explanation:
Crucifixion
Jesus’s death by crucifixion was a divinely ordained historical event by which he lovingly accomplished atonement, purchased Christians’ freedom from sin’s bondage, won their justification before the Father, and triumphed over Satan’s tyranny.
Evidently crucifixion was practiced first by the Medes and Persians and later by Alexander the Great (356–323 BC), the Carthaginians, and the Romans. Both Greeks and Romans restricted its use to slaves, considering it too barbaric for citizens. In the imperial era the Romans extended the use to aliens, but even so it was used mainly for crimes against the state. (Baker, Crucifixion, 554)
The Atonement/propitiatory death of Christ.
Christian thought, the act by which God and man are brought together in personal relationship. The term is derived from Anglo-Saxon words meaning “making at one,” hence “at-one-ment.” It presupposes a separation or alienation that needs to be overcome if human beings are to know God and have fellowship with him. (Baker, Atonement, 232)
Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
The Saying of Jesus most meaningful:
Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. Luke 23:34 “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”
Woman, behold thy son! John 19:26 “When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!”
Jesus Christ cared for sinners and his family even when dying the most excruciating physical death known to man.
Argue:
Jesus didn’t need to die. Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Sin isn’t all that bad. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Aren’t there other ways? John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

We ask you, O Lord, pour your grace into our hearts,
that, as we have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel,
so by His cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of His resurrection,
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Henry Alford (Dean of Canterbury)

John 13:35 “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
1 Peter 1:22 “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:”
3. The Proving of Christ’s Acceptance.
3. The Proving of Christ’s Acceptance.
Explanation:
The love of the Father towards the son: John 10:17–18 “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
The acceptable sacrifice was declared by Christ’s resurrection: Romans 1:3–4 “Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:”
It is of the Word we are born: 1 Peter 1:23 “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”
The Father accepted Jesus sacrifice: 1 John 2:1–2 “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

This section contains unarguable, incontrovertible proof that God is the author of Scripture and Jesus the fulfillment of messianic prophecy. The details are so minute that no human could have predicted them by accident and no imposter fulfilled them by cunning.
