A Virgin shall bear a Son
A Virgin shall bear a Son
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
cited in Matthew 1:23 ““Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”” (see also Isa 8:8)
A Old Testament prophesy that Jesus fulfilled. Let’s ponder a few questions.
Why was a sign necessary? The text says, “Behold” look and see. God wants us to stop and look at the unusual.
How can a virgin conceive? Through the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35)
What kind of Son was Jesus? Unique, One of a Kind (John 3:16) μονογενής monogenes
Could Joseph be Jesus’ father? No, (Mt 1:25) He did not have sex with Mary until after Jesus was born. They eventually had children, Mt 12:46; Mk 6:3.
Why was it important that Jesus be called Immanuel, “God with us”? To die to take away all the sins of the world (John 1:29; Heb 10:4, 10, 11-12) Jesus had to be both man (to die) and God (for it to be for the world)
A Child is Born
A Child is Born
Isaiah 9:6–7 “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” Cited in Luke 1:32.
A beloved Christmas prophesy about the Messiah.
We can notice five things mentioned about the Messiah.
1. He was to be born a Son. Fully human and given unto us, the nation of Israel.
2. He will be given dominion or government. as Ruler over Israel (Micah 5:2) and Ruler of the world (Zech 14:9).
3. He will have many attribute, five are listed here.
A miracle-Worker; He will have healing in His words; Deity; Eternal in the Godhead; and the Peacemaker and Reconciler of souls.
4. He will be the Messiah, the Son of David who fulfills the Davidic Covenant and is seated on David’s throne (Luke 1 32-33).
5. The last thing mentioned here is the energizing force that makes this possible. John 3:16 describes the love of God that motivates the plan of salvation, here the word is zeal. It could be translated jealousy or the strong desire to get something that was taken back.
Birthplace Bethlehem
Birthplace Bethlehem
Micah 5:2 ““But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”” Cited in Mt 2:6.
Did you ever notice that Micah is addressing the city of Bethlehem? A little town, one of many in Israel. It was the same city that gave the world king David, but still a humble little town.
Great things can come from a humble place. The little church, in the little town of Franklin produced two members of the first missionary team to leave America. Samuel and Roxana Knott joined Adoniram Judson and others on the historic mission trip to Burma. They ended up founding the mission station in Bombay. Being a pioneer was not easy, missions is hard. They followed the humble example of their Savior coming from a small, but not insignificant town.
David’s Heir According to the Covenant
David’s Heir According to the Covenant
2 Samuel 7:12–14 ““When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14a I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. cited Luke 1:32-33.
The Seed according to the Covenant
Gabriel’s announcement to Mary included this great answer to a promise of God. The Davidic Covenant promised a descendant of David would be seated on David’s throne. And that it would be an everlasting reign. Luke 1:33 “And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Jesus’ birth was the answer to a promise to David a thousand years prior, but that reign will be forever.
Remember Job on Christmas
Remember Job on Christmas
Job 19:25–27 “For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; 26 And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, 27 Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!” John 5:28–29; Gal. 4:4; Eph. 1:7, 11, 14.
It’s easy to get caught up in the focus of the Christmas baby. His birth is a miracle and a joy. Let’s not forget the purpose of His birth. As Jesus walked this earth He kept saying things like, “It’s not my time” or “My hour is not yet”. He was speaking of the fulfillment of His mission to the earth.
The cross and the empty tomb of Easter is the culmination of the life’s mission of Christ. While it’s great to celebrate the birth of Christ, without His death and resurrection, it would be incomplete.
Job, in his trials, knew the importance of the end of the story. He rejoiced in the fact that his Redeemer lived. He believed and was assured he would be joining he Redeemer.
Thank God for our Redeemer, and thank God He did not stay a baby in a manger, but took our sins on the cross for our sins. Romans 4:25 “who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.”
