Becoming a GOAT

We all want greatness and our world can pressure us to be a GOAT, or Greatest Of All Time. This desire is not necessarily bad but can be confusing.

Who defines greatness?

If we want to be great, and I am not opposed to it, then we must ask who gets to define greatness.

Christmas gives us a lesson in greatness.

Throughout the Christmas story we have the “greats” and “not so greats” highlighted.

Herod wanted to be “Great”!

In many ways he was. The rebuilding of the temple. His political prowess and ability to be a shrewd diplomat. HIs legacy would live on with his three kids taking over leadership after his death.

Greatness influences others.

For better or for worse.

Greatness is seeking & searching.

Greatness according to Scripture is about seeking answers.

Greatness involves being open to change.

Herod was not. The Magi, Mary and Joseph were.

Greatness is about submitting & serving.

Our text in Philippians 2 highlights this. If there was ever a king who had the right to demand and do “whatever he wanted” it would have been Jesus the creator of the world.

We all can reflect the greatness of God.

This ultimately is our goal. It isn’t about being great in and of ourselves but because of the grace of Jesus.
