What Child is This?

Buenos dias. Es muy bueno estar con ustedes esta mañana/tarde. Les traigo saludos de la buena gente de New Hope en Missouri City y deseos de una feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo para todos ustedes. Gracias por darme la oportunidad de predicar esta mañana y por favor perdonen mi español. Tuve la opcion de hablar en ingles con un traductor, pero REALMENTE quiero aprender a hablar bien el espanol. Dicen que nunca aprenderé a menos que lo use así que, aquí va.

Soy Danny Sigmon y he trabajado en la Iglesia Luterana New Hope desde 2001, lo que significa que en marzo voy a vigesimo quinto año allí. Al principio era el músico de la iglesia, luego el administrador, y ahora pronto seré el Vicario mientras termino mis estudios de seminario para finalmente ser ordenado como Pastor en el verano de 2026. He oido de este lugar desde el primer dia que llegue a New Hope y he escuchado cuentos de ustedes por los ultimos veinte y cuatro años. He conocido al pastor Julio y cuando el nos visito y oi de todas las cosas maravillosas acerca de ustedes y de este lugar. Es muy posible que cuando termine el seminario me vaya de New Hope y pensé: «Está bien, ¡no puedes haber trabajado en New Hope por veinte y cinco años y NO haber visitado El Salvador! También necesitaba un proyecto más para la escuela antes de que termine el seminario y decidí venir aquí para estar con ustedes y aprender de ustedes y escribir un informe sobre la asociación única y maravillosa entre nuestras dos iglesias para cumplir con ese requisito. ¡Estoy tan bendecido de estar con ustedes y de conocerlos en persona! Tengan paciencia con mi español. Este gringo lo está intentando de mejor mi espanol.

Ahora. al asunto del Evangelio y nuestras lecturas de hoy:

Si alguna vez hubo alguna duda de que Jesús era verdaderamente humano, lo vemos con seguridad aquí. Jesús preocupó a su madre hasta la muerte e hizo que ella y José se enfadaran de verdad.  Jesús era muy travieso y estoy seguro de que todas las madres pueden entender bien lo que se sentia María, ¿verdad? ¿No nos ha pasado a todos cuando desaparece uno de nuestros hijos? El pánico de no saber dónde están y la preocupación por su seguridad es aplastante, ¡hasta que por fin los encontramos! Entonces, ¡qué alivio y luego qué rabia! «¡Oh, tú! ¿Cómo te atreves a asustarme así? Las palabras de María fueron: «Hijo, ¿por qué nos has tratado de esta manera? Mira, Tu padre y yo te hemos estado buscando llenos de angustia».

Cuando por fin lo encontraron, lo vieron con los intelectuales y rabinos discutiendo las escrituras y escuchándoles explicarlas, estoy seguro de que también hubo un momento de temor en el que pensaron que les estaba molestando. Pero, en lugar de eso, participaba con los sabios mayores, que se asombraban de su madurez y de su profundo conocimiento de las Escrituras. Y como mama, aunque quería abofetearle por desaparecer, también estaba un poco orgullosa. Su hijo estaba impresionando a todos los rabinos.

Jesús no entiende por qué se enfadan, porque él estaba donde tenía que estar, haciendo lo que tenía que hacer, «en casa de su padre», dice. Aún así, sin decírselo a sus padres, dejó que el grupo que regresara a casa mientras el volviera al templo, aunque su mamá y papá le habian dicho que fuera a casa. Viajar puede ser peligroso, sobre todo en la antigüedad, y la gente viajaba junta por seguridad, así que no era extrano que Maria estuviera tan preocupada. Jesús había dejado la seguridad del grupo. Pero Jesús ya estaba empezando a ver el mundo como lo vería más tarde en su vida. Ya estaba haciendo lo que Dios le llamaba a hacer, incluso cuando eso molestaba a otras personas.

Esta mañana también hemos escuchado la historia de Samuel. El hijo milagroso de Ana, que ella llevó al templo para ser criado como siervo de Dios por gratitud; el niño que fue criado en el templo con Elí. También molestó a los adultos que lo rodeaban. Samuel oía una voz que le llamaba por la noche e iba a despertar a Elí, que a su vez se enfadaba al ser despertado. Samuel se daría cuenta más tarde de que era la voz de Dios que le llamaba.

He aquí dos historias en las que Dios trabaja a traves de la inocencia de los ninos. Los niños eran considerados no tan importantes como los adultos en el mundo antiguo.  Sin embargo Dios siempre los utilice, se dirige a ellos como siervos dignos de confianza. Jesús mismo eleva a los niños:

«En verdad os digo que, si no cambiáis y os hacéis como niños, no entraréis en el Reino de los Cielos. El que se hace humilde como este niño es el mayor en el Reino de los Cielos. El que acoge a un niño como éste en mi nombre, me acoge a mí». (Mateo diez y ocho tres a cinco)

«Dejad que los niños vengan a mí, y no se lo impidáis, porque de los que son como ellos es el Reino de los Cielos». (Mateo diez y nueve catorce)

‌

«Te doy gracias, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque has ocultado estas cosas a los sabios y a los inteligentes y se las has revelado a los niños de pecho.» (Mateo once veinte y cinco)

‌

Dios favorece a los pobres y débiles, a los vulnerables, a través de los débiles y humildes Dios revela su poder al mundo a través de las personas menos probables y los niños a menudo abren el camino.

Nunca he visto o escuchado acerca de un cuerpo de personas que tomen esto mas a pecho que la gente de Yano El Coyol/El Buen Pastor/Puerto Parada. Su aliento a los jóvenes es LEGENDARIO en New Hope. Delegación tras delegación ha venido a visitarlos y cada vez ellos alzan la manera en que ustedes abrazan a sus hijos,  les enseñan y los empoderan para servir en la iglesia y ser parte del ministerio.

Como parte del documento que estoy escribiendo sobre este viaje, tuve una entrevista de dos horas con el Pastor Edwin Aparicio. Él habla de ser un adolescente y no tener una conexión con la iglesia. Lo que sentía en la iglesia no resonaba en su alma. Habla de estar perdido, y entonces, casi por accidente, a la gente de Yano El Coyol, y sintió algo especial, una profunda conexión con Ustedes y su ministerio; algo que le transformo en su vida. Habla de que era un jugador de fútbol decente y al fin escogió la iglesia en vez de conseguir una posible carrera profesional como futbolista. Así de poderoso sintió el espíritu de Dios dentro y entre Ustedes. Su amor a Dios y su compromiso con los niños y su ministerio cambiaron su vida y ayudaron a guiar a un nuevo pastor al ministerio. Y esta es solo una de muchas historias de transformacion que vienen de esta iglesia.

Estas historias son conocidas por TODOS en New Hope en los Estados Unidos. Estamos asombrados de su ministerio. Estamos asombrados de su trabajo con los jóvenes y los niños. Estamos asombrados por la forma en que se cuidan como iglesia. Estamos asombrados de cómo se reunen para crear un mundo mejor para los vecinos que los rodean y para las personas necesitadas. Cada vez que hay una necesidad, cada vez que hay una llamada de Dios, han dado un paso adelante con una fe tremenda y han dicho: «Señor, enséñanos qué hacer». Es un testimonio impresionante del poder del Evangelio de Jesucristo. Son gigantes de la fe y nos enseñan a New Hope y al resto del mundo el poder transformador de Dios cada vez que venimos a visitaros y cada vez que vienen a visitarnos. Que el Dios de las infinitas posibilidades los proteja y los bendiga en este ministerio, y que Dios bendiga la relacion larga y amorosa entre nuestras dos iglesias.  Amén.

Good morning. It is so good to be with you this morning/evening. I bring greetings from the good people of New Hope in Missouri City and wishes for a merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to preach this morning and please forgive my Spanish. I had the option of speaking English with a Translator, but I REALLY want to learn to speak Spanish well. They say I’ll never learn unless I use it so, here goes.

I am Danny Sigmon and have worked at New Hope Lutheran Church since 2001, which means that in march I will start my 25th year there. I was orginally the church musician, then the administrator, and now soon to be the Vicar as I finish my seminary journey to eventually be ordained as a Pastor in the summer of 2026. I heard about this place from the first day I arrived at New Hope and have heard stories about you for the last 24 years. I have met pastor Julio and when he visited and heard all the wonderful things about you and this place. It is quite possible that when I am done with seminary I will be leaving New Hope and I thought, “Okay. You cannot have worked at New Hope for 25 years and NOT visited El Salvador! I also needed one more project for school before seminary ends and decided that I would come here to be with you and learn from you and write a paper about the unique and wonderful partnership between our two peoples to fulfill that requirement. I am so blessed to be with you and am looking forward to getting to know you in person! Just be patient with my spanish. This gringo is trying.

Now. to the business of the Gospel and our readings today:

If there was ever any doubt that Jesus was truly human we see it for sure here. Jesus worried his mother to death and made her and Joseph really angry! Jesus was really quite naughty and I’m sure every mother can sympathize with Mary, right? Haven’t we all had a moment when one of our kids disappears? The panic of not knowing where they are and the worry for their safety is crushing until at last they are found! Then such relief and then such anger! “OH you! How dare you scare me like that. Mary’s words were, “«Hijo, ¿por qué nos has tratado de esta manera? Mira, Tu padre y yo te hemos estado buscando llenos de angustia».

When they finally found him they saw him with the scholars and rabbis discussing the scriptures and listening to them expound on them, I’m sure there was also a moment of dread where they thought he was bothering them. Instead, however, he was participating with the wise older men who were astonished at his maturity and deep understanding of the scriptures. And as a mama, even though she wanted to smack him for disappearing, she was also a little bit proud. That was her boy up there impressing all of the rabbis.

Jesus fails to see why they are upset because he was in his where he was meant to be doing what he was meant to do, “in his father’s house,” he says. Still though, without telling his parents, he left the group that was traveling back home to go back to the temple even after mom and dad said, let’s go. Travel can be dangerous, especially in ancient times and people traveled together to for safety, so it was no wonder Marry would be so worried! Jesus had left the safety of the group. But Jesus, was already beginning to see the world the way he would later in his life. He was already doing what God called him to do even when it upset other people.

We also heard the story of Samuel this morning. The miracle child of Hannah that she brought to the temple to be raised as a servant of God out of gratitude, the child that was raised in the temple with Eli. He also upset the adults around him. Samuel heard a voice calling him in the night and would go wake up Eli, who in turn would be annoyed with being awakened. Samuel would later realize it was the voice of God calling him.

Here are two stories god working in the lives of his believers through the innocent obedience of Children. Children were considered lesser people in the ancient world, not full adults or humans, and yet God, time and time again, turns to them as trustworthy servants. Jesus himself lifts children up:

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

Matthew 19:14 NRSVue

but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”

Matthew 11:25 NRSVue

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants

God favors the poor and the weak, the vulnerable ones, through the weak and lowly God reveals his power to the world through the least likely people and children often lead the way.

Never have I seen or heard about a body of people that take this more to heart than the people of (El Buen Pastor/ Yan El Coyol/ Puerto parade). Your encouragement to young people is LEGENDARY at New Hope. Delegation after delegation have come to visit you and every single time they lift up the way that you embrace your children and teach and empower them to serve in the church and be a part of ministry.

As part of the paper that I am writing about this trip, I had a two hour interview with Edwin Aparicio. He talks about being a teenager and not having a connection with the church. What he was feeling in church was not resonating within his soul. He talks about being lost, and then, almost by accident, he met you and the people of Yan El Coyol, and he felt something special, a deep connection with you and your ministry. It was transformational in his life. He talks about being a decent soccer player and eventually choosing you over a possible professional career as a fútbolíto. That was how powerful he felt the spirit of God in and among you. Your love of God and commitment to the children and your ministry changed ahis life and helped lead a new Pastor into ministry. And this is just one of the many stories of transformation that come from this church.

These stories are known by EVERYONE at New Hope back in the United States. We are in awe at your ministry. We are in awe of your work with youth and children. We are in awe at the way you take care of each other. We are in awe at how you come together and make a better world for the neighbors around you and for the people in need. Each time there is a need, each time there is a call from God, you have stepped out in tremendous faith and said, “Lord, teach us what to do.” That is a stunning witness to the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You are giants of faith and you teach us at New Hope and the rest of the world about the transformative power of God every time we come here to visit you and every time you come visit us. May the God of infinite possibilities guard you and bless you in this ministry, and may God bless the long and loving relationship between our two churches. Amen.
