Psalm of the Day: Psalm 81
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 81
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. Of Asaph.
Sing aloud to God our strength;
shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
Raise a song; sound the tambourine,
the sweet lyre with the harp.
Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
at the full moon, on our feast day.
For it is a statute for Israel,
a rule of the God of Jacob.
He made it a decree in Joseph
when he went out over the land of Egypt.
I hear a language I had not known:
“I relieved your shoulder of the burden;
your hands were freed from the basket.
In distress you called, and I delivered you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
“But my people did not listen to my voice;
Israel would not submit to me.
So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts,
to follow their own counsels.
Oh, that my people would listen to me,
that Israel would walk in my ways!
I would soon subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes.
Those who hate the Lord would cringe toward him,
and their fate would last forever.
But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat,
and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
Advent 4: John and Zora
Advent 4: John and Zora
READ: Malachi 3:1-4
Advent is the time to prepare for Christmas,
to prepare for Christ’s promised coming, long ago and any minute.
As we prepare on this fourth Sunday of Advent,
We know that God is calling us to something new, something unbelievable,
and we have a promise from Malachi,
a promise that God made,
a promise of a messenger with a new covenant, a new leader for us all.
God-of-the-Angel-Armies will suddenly arrive,
like a refiner’s white-hot fire,
like the strongest lye soap in the laundry.
God will purify us until we are fit for God,
just as we were in the years long ago.
(Someone lights ALL FOUR OUTER candles)
In the light of this fourth candle,
we prepare to see unbelievable things and remember God’s promise.
Thanks be to God, who keeps every promise to us!
May the Lord be with your spirit and Grace be with you.
Sermon:
Sermon:
Once again and as always good morning church, I was glad when they said to me let us go and worship in the house of the Lord. Especially here on this, the fourth Sunday in Advent. And as the fourth Sunday in Advent, it means it's our last Advent, sermon in our sermon, Where we have been looking at the, the one who is promised that that Jesus born some 2000 years ago, born to the Virgin Mary at a certain time at the fullness of time.
00:33
Was in fact, the Fulfillment of all of the promises of God that had been given to his people, The idea that all of the promises of God, find their yes and amen. In Jesus Christ. And we've spent time looking at the big promises we've looked at, uh, Genesis 3, what we call the proto-evangelium.
00:55
The promise that there would be one who would a seed of the woman who would crush the head of the serpents? Our enemy. The devil Jesus is the one who defeated all of our enemies. We looked at the promise to Abraham a promise that God would grow him and multiply him that he would be a a great nation and a blessing to the whole world really and we saw Jesus as the Fulfillment of that the son who would Be the one who would fulfill this promise but then we as the church with Christ as the head also,
01:29
Help fulfill that promise.
01:32
Last week we looked at what's often called the Mosaic Covenant. I endeavored in Sermon to cover the law and how does the law as a covenant? We looked in Deuteronomy 4 to see that God specifically called his law. Covenant how does the law as a covenant point us to Christ and how does Christ perfectly fulfill the law?
01:55
This week, we will be looking at What is in many ways? My favorite if only because the main character in this story and I we have something in common Our name, it's not an accident. I, in fact, have named after this character in scripture, so more credit to him, less credit to me, I guess.
02:19
Uh, well, but we will be looking at what is called the davidic. Covenant. And of all the covenants we find in scripture, There's something. Particularly beautiful about the davidic Covenant. And we'll look at that, we'll look at how it comes about.
02:43
But ultimately, what we will be focusing on. Because again, when we're looking at Big subjects like this, you can't take it all, you have to pick one part And what we will be looking at is the promise. To God's people. To have a king. For those of us who went to Claris this year, As I sat down, and I began to look at the The text that we're going to be preached on at this conference.
03:12
A little bit of fear and dread crept into my heart because I looked at one of the last sermons, that was going to be preached preached by ligand. Duncan who is the chancellor of the Seminary that I currently attend. Probably the favorite Professor. I've had in all of my Seminary classes.
03:31
He taught my in fact. Really what we're looking at when we call in this whole series, is Child of Promise. It's, we're looking at covenants. Well Professor Duncan taught. My Covenant, theology class. He literally taught me. The class that I've been trying to help you understand for the past four weeks.
03:52
And he preached a sermon on this exact text. So here's a man wiser than me much smarter than me much more gifted than me and he's going to preach the text. I plan on preaching, in just a couple months, this is what I'm thinking a few weeks ago. And in all honesty.
04:11
It was one of the best sermons I've heard in a long time. It's, it's online. If anyone wants to watch that sermon, let me know. I can get you a link to it. But this week, as I was sitting down to study and get ready, my first Temptation was well, I could just put that sermon up and I could just go sit and watch it too.
04:30
But here is my second Epiphany.
04:36
My Hope Is. That the love I have for you all as a church shines through And there's just things that I want to say to you church about the Covenant, with David, about the promise given to David. But then the promise given to us, For a king. So with that thought that we're going to be looking at the promise, given to us, that we will have a king.
05:00
Let's read our text second Samuel, so we're flipping quite a bit further than the first five books of the Bible. Second Samuel chapter 7, we will be looking at verses 8 through 16 this morning.
05:16
These are the words of the Lord. In fact, these are directly the words of the Lord. These are the words that God is going to give to his Prophet, Nathan to say to David. So these are Right, every time we read scripture, these are God's words when I finish reading.
05:31
I say these are the words of the Lord for us this morning. These are very particular and very particular way God's words and we'll look at that later. But second, Samuel chapter 7, verse 6, Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant? David. Thus says the Lord of hosts.
05:52
I took you from the pasture. From following the Sheep that you should be a prince over my People Israel. And I've been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you, And I will make for you a great name like the name of the great ones of the earth.
06:11
And I will appoint a place for my People, Israel. And I will plant them so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them. No more as formally. From the time that I appointed judges over my People Israel. And I will give you rest from your enemies.
06:31
Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house And when your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your Offspring after you who shall come from your body. And I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name and I will establish the Throne of his kingdom forever.
06:55
I will be to him a father and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men but with the stripes of the sons of men, But my steadfast love will not depart from him. As I took it from Saul who I put away from before you.
07:13
In your house and your kingdom shall be made. Sure forever. Before me, your throne shall be established forever. These are the words of the Lord for us this morning. Let's open with a word of prayer. Our Holy Father in heaven, Our God. The one who loves us, who delivers us, who sent your only son?
07:40
Our Lord, Our Savior and our King Jesus Christ. We thank you for all of these precious gifts. We thank you for your word given to us, that we might know you. And we ask that you would speak to our hearts this morning. Store. Our affections help us to see.
07:56
Clearly all that you have said, All that you have done. Help us to see the hope and beauty of your promises. May you stir our affections towards you? We ask your Holy Spirit would work within us. Teaching us molding us and shaping. Help us to be a people who hear your word and are changed as we are conformed more into the image of your son.
08:19
Our Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ. It's in his name that we pray. Amen.
08:27
Last week I said the Covenant the promise we'll be looking at is a little differently. And I, unfortunately, I felt at the time could not use the exact same outline that I had used the two weeks previous as we looked at the first promise in Genesis 3. And then the next promise in Abraham, Well, this week.
08:52
I, I will warn you. Don't go all the way to the end. But we're gonna pick up that theme because I really feel like This is what's helpful in helping you understand this passage. I can't compete with Professor Duncan in his eloquence and Beauty in how he presented it.
09:10
But I do have four weeks of history that I get to build off of, to help you understand this passage a little better. So, the first thing, anytime we come to a passage like this. And anytime we're just sort of jumped, we're thrown into this promise, right? God says this promise, God, even talks about things that have happened in the past.
09:30
Ask that he has done for David. He talks about these things and so we have to before we can understand the promise, we have to understand. The context. What is going on here? Well, the we're gonna try to take this context and sort of go. Go out and further and further Rings that's going to be the goal here.
09:54
Well, what immediately has happened. Well, what immediately has happened before, this passage the Ark of the Covenant which was the symbol of God's presence among his people and was in many ways. The visible physical manifestation of God's presence among his people. It's been missing. The, The Arc hasn't been where it's supposed to be.
10:16
But because God is powerful and Sovereign, and you can go read Samuel and see how God gets his Ark back to his people. It's sort of a work of God in all of this. But the ark returns. And um, in the passage before this David um, gets in a little bit of a fight with his wife because he is willing to ridicule himself.
10:41
In joyous celebration that God's the the manifestation of God's presence is back, right? The ark returns David's dancing and his wife's like, hey, you are the king. You should not be acting like this. And David basically says, you think this is bad when it comes to praising God. I will act as foolish as I want because he deserves all glory honor and praise basically.
11:04
And then as David in his joyous, celebration of seeing the ark return. He sits there. And he sits there in his Palace. And his Palace is gorgeous. Why is David's Palace gorgeous? Well because God has Done Mighty things for David. He has quashed all of the enemies of Israel.
11:23
David's Kingdom. God has helped David be prosperous to a level that no other Nation had seen thus far. They were doing well, there was peace in the land. David's Rule and Reign though there was much trial and trouble as he grew into it. At the beginning, there was definitely some problems with Saul and Saul's like there was some issues but ultimately David.
11:51
Presided over the Golden Age. Of Israel. And so, David is sitting in his very nice Palace. Gold on the walls and cedar pillars and it's a gorgeous palace. And God's Ark. Is in a tent. Admittedly the nicest tent ever made. To just call it a 10. It was huge and ornate, and beautiful.
12:22
It's called the Tabernacle but David looks nice. Like, I have a palace God has. Attempt.
12:34
And David comes to the realization. That's not right. Credit to David. David was scripture attest, a man after God's Own Heart says, I mean, David's perfect. We can get into David's sins and failings. It doesn't mean David wasn't human, like, we all are But he did have the right inclination and God put his love on David in a very special way.
13:01
But David to his credit thinks, it's not, right? Did I well we could go 7 verse 2. The king said to Nathan the prophet. See now I dwell in a house of Cedar, but the Ark of God dwells in a tent and David basically says, I want to build for God a house And for this desire for David's because of David's desire.
13:31
To build God a house and it's not just that God. David wants a bill got a house, right? If we think through this is because David had a right understanding of God in his Sovereign power and Majesty and God who deserves all glory honor, praise and adoration. And God, who rules David rules in his stead because David understood and saw God for who he was and David for who he was.
13:58
And because David, David Wished to honor God at all times in all places and especially here in building God a house.
14:11
God comes. And He blesses, David. Right before what we read. God comes like, do you realize I haven't lived in a house since the day, I brought these people out of Egypt, right? I saved my people and all of the people that I delivered, not one of them said, let's build a house.
14:31
And I walked with them with Joshua. As we conquered right now, we're going to get a little bigger in contact and I walked with all these people and I defeated their enemies when they entered the promised land, I destroyed Jericho with my power. I delivered them with my power.
14:43
I was with them. I gave them lands. Still didn't have a house.
14:53
And then there was a time of judging the people rebelled and I sent a deliverer in the form of a judge and they rebelled and I would send another deliverer in the form of a judge and they would Rebel and I would send a delivery and it got worse and worse and worse, and not a single person.
15:06
Then wanted to build me a house. And then I sent Saul. And there's some some difficulty here because the people wanted Saul and God was like wait for my king but I Saul I let Saul be king. And Saul got really puffed, up in his own importance, he did things, he had no right or privilege to do.
15:30
He acted in a way that was unbefitting and he never built out a house. Since the time I delivered my people from the time of Moses, through all of this time not once have I had a house
15:46
But you want to build me a house, David.
15:52
And he makes this Covenant.
15:56
Inside of the Covenant, I want to do a little more context that also will touch on the next point but I want us to remember the promise made to Abraham The problems made to Abraham. Was that he would be a father of a multitude. That he would be a great nation that that Nation would be blessed and that nation would be a blessing.
16:19
To the world around them. David. In many ways, not in every way. David in many ways. Is the Fulfillment to the promises given to Abraham? Peace rules in the land. People come from all around to bring homage to David because to be blessed by David, the king, your nation would be black.
16:44
Dave, the Kingdom of Israel was a blessing to the all the nations around them. David was in many ways the Fulfillment of many of the promises to Abraham
16:56
There's peace. In the land. The seed of the serpents. In many ways. Is crushed.
17:11
In David's rule. The people in the time of David serve the Lord, the way they ought to idolatry is removed from the land, the Ark of the Covenant is brought back. Worship of God, is made right in the rule of David in David. We begin to see many of the promises of God.
17:31
Find their fulfillment.
17:38
And so, when we read this promise, And realize that God even says to David sure, many of the things are fulfilled in you but it's still not good enough. We begin to see the pointing. To something more beautiful. There's the context. David. Is the Fulfillment. The partial fulfillment of many of the promises and many of the things we've hoped for and longed for.
18:09
And if we were reading through the Old Testament and you start reading through it and you're like, right let's pretend you've done my homework that I've been giving you every single week. And and you you're you've been reading all of the Old Testament in terms of the fight between the seed of the serpent and the seat of the woman.
18:29
And you begin to see this and you, you read Abraham and you begin to every child that we see in scripture, we're like, is this is this? The child? Is this? The promise of Abraham fulfilled? Is this the promise of Abraham fulfill Ever since we've read the law and this promise that God will bless and keep and multiply and give them peace in the land.
18:52
Every time we've been waiting for this to find its fulfillment. And here comes David
19:02
And God gives him this promise, let's look at the content then of the promise.
19:09
It starts in verse 8. God recounts for David, what he has done for him. I took you from the passion David. You were a Shepherd, right? Saul was King. Saul had a son. Jonathan your best friend Jonathan, your beloved Jonathan. Saul wanted to build a dynasty for himself but I God plucked.
19:30
You David you were sitting in the field watching sheep, you stunk like sheep. The most exciting day of your life. Was that time you fought a barrel lion and you saved your sheep? And your whole life was just destined to be caring for sheep. You were a younger son from your father.
19:49
Your older brothers were off in war, gaining Fame and Glory you were in the pasture, David? And I plucked you and I chose you. To be the prince over my people, verse 8. And I delivered you this is verse 9. I went with you. When Saul was out to get you, I delivered you and protected you when your enemies were out to get you.
20:12
I protected you. And I delivered you when you went out to battle in War, I protected you and delivered you when you David with your Mighty Men of Valor, went to go fight. I was the one who brought them Victory. Not the strength of their arm. Not their power.
20:26
I God did that for you. David.
20:34
And cut off your enemies. And so David. I will make for you a great name, like the great ones of the earth.
20:45
I mentioned, I'm named after this David, When I was growing up. Most people. Just knew me by my last name. I was Poland. Why? Because in every class, in every place that I ever was, there was three or four Davids in every class. On the basketball team. There's 12 people.
21:07
There are three Davids. That's a lot of David's. And so one time I called Domino's, I was the manager of I was I was second in command at this, Domino's, it was on Main Street here. Across the street from Lowe's. And I I I call into dominoes as the person who makes the schedule, but I'd forgotten when I went in.
21:30
I don't know if it was. Do I have the 330 shift or the 4? 30 shift. So I called and called Domino's is I don't remember who this is, whoever Hey, this is David. I just need to know what time I come in. Who. This is your boss David.
21:45
What time do I come in? What do you mean? This is Poland. Oh, you coming at 4? 30. Was this so hard? No one knew me by David because the name David is so. Ubiquitous
22:01
Did God give David a name? A great name. Like the princes of all the Earth. I think so.
22:12
We already start to see that. God's promises to David are fulfilled in many ways. And even more than that, David recorded in God's word in the Holy Scripture for all time forever. Not one jot or Tittle will pass away. David. And his faith Hebrews talks about this. A lot will stand.
22:33
His name is great and verse 10, I will appoint my place for My People Israel and will plant them so they will dwell in their own place and be disturbed. No more and violent men shall afflict them. No more as formally from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel.
22:49
If the promise to Abraham was they will be a great nation. The province that David is and that Nation will know peace and rest and violent men shall not afflict it. It's better. Would you rather be a part of a nation that's at War and fighting for its life all the time or a nation that sits there in peace and violent?
23:11
Men cannot afflict it, the promise of David is better. It's a a growing of the promise made to Abraham. Verse 11 continues and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Right. So God comes. Here's the content of this promise. God comes to David. He reminds David that he has been with him.
23:34
And with David in particular that David God set his love and his grace, and his mercy and his power on David in a very particular and beautiful way. And God said David. I picked you out of being a Shepherd and I planted you and I blessed you and I kept you and I made you king.
23:53
And therefore, because I bless you, all of the people under you, the nation under you, as well as blessed and will find rest. And then God, In what is this? Is. It's so beautiful here. God. Begins to make puns.
24:14
Honestly, he does. Let's go back. David? What does David want to do? Verse 2 of second Samuel 7. See. Now I dwell in a house of Cedar but the Ark of God dwells in a tent So David says, I have a house God has a tent. I'm going to Build God, a house.
24:40
And God comes to David. In 2nd Samuel. Vert chapter 7, verse 11 and says, moreover, the Lord declares To. That the Lord. Will make you a house.
25:00
David wants to build God, a house and God says, I'm going to make you a house, but the pun here is the word house. It's the same word in the Hebrew, but it can mean house. It could also mean like household or family, and it can also mean, A dentist.
25:19
God says, you want to build me a house of wood? I'm going to build you a house. A dynasty. How long will that Dynasty last verse 12, when your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers when you die David? I will raise up your Offspring who shall come from your body and I will establish his kingdom.
25:39
So David, you'll be king. You'll die. Another king will raise up. I'll be with him.
25:48
And he shall build a house for my name. David. You want to build me a house, I'm going to build your house and in fact, David you want to build a house. I will build you a house and you won't build me a house, but I'll raise up a son.
26:03
I'll raise up a child of yours. He will be king. He will be the one who builds my house verse 13 and I will establish the Throne of his kingdom. Forever.
26:22
Saul right? Here's some context for this Saul. The King Saul part of his problem is he wanted to establish a dynasty. The Saul Dynasty? And it lasted for one generation, it ended with Saul, Every King wants a dynasty. Every person in some sense you want to leave something for your children and your children's children and your children's children's children.
26:50
You want people to remember you when you're dead and gone, This is a natural thought that dwells on human hearts. Hey David. How about this one? Forever.
27:07
And your children. Will be. Forever.
27:17
And we, I will be King to them. In a particular way verse 14, I will be to him a father. He shall be to me a son. There will be a familial closeness the a relationship I had with Abraham isn't even this close the relationship. I have even with you.
27:33
David David, who I love, who I care for, who I cherish? It's not even this close. It's going to be different. And better.
27:46
Then we get this line when he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men with the stripes of the sons of men. But my steadfast love will not depart from him. This is this line in here, is where we start to see what we would call.
28:00
Partial fulfillment in different things that are happening. Right? In Solomon in in like David's immediate, son. Hey, if Solon messes up, I'm going to discipline him. Did God discipline Solomon. Yeah, he did. But God says, even when I discipline him. Even here in this promise, God is saying, no matter how mad I get, no matter how vile they get.
28:25
I will discipline him, it may hurt, there will be Stripes of the rods of men. Your son will see, Stripes of the rods of men put that in your brain. Let that rattle all around for a little bit. We'll come back to it. Your son will face the stripes of the rods of men.
28:43
But verse 15, my steadfast love will not Department, no matter how messed up, it gets no matter how difficult it gets, no matter how rebellious your son gets and no matter how difficult the punishment gets know this, my love will never depart from your son, David. It won't be like Saul.
29:04
Verse, 16, your house and your kingdom shall be made. Sure forever. Before me, your throne shall be established forever. In short, the promise of God to David is for an eternal Dynasty, and an eternal Kingdom, where God's love is set upon this Kingdom in such a way that it will never depart never Escape.
29:27
They are in God's love. Sure and secure he will discipline him like a father to a child and it may be painful and it may be difficult, God's love will never leave, and David's Throne will be established. Forever.
29:46
How long? How long? Will the son of David sit on the throne? Forever.
30:00
How long will David's son be king? For. Well, there's the promise. Now, let's look for
30:16
This is where I got. You switched it up. Let's look for the king. David has a son. Named Solomon. Solomon has some praiseworthy things our last series before Philippians. We went through Ecclesiastes, it's credited Solomon. Why? Because Solomon was the wisest man to ever live. God said, what do you want Solomon?
30:40
I'm because Right. The context here matters because of the promise I gave to your father, David Solomon. I'm going to help you be king. What do you want Solomon? Name? It, I'll give it to you. Because I want to be wise so I can be a good King. Good job, Solomon.
30:58
And he's wise. And it turns out the wisest man who ever lived can still be a cotton-headed ninny monkeys. And Solomon had a vast multitude of wives. He allowed his wives to turn his heart away from God.
31:18
And in Solomon, David's son. One gen, we're not talking David and then this promise and it's beautiful and then someone mess it up. David's son. Mess it up. Idolatry. Enters the land. And after Solomon, This is chaos and pandemonium Civil War breaks out. We look at this promise and it's like violent men shall afflict.
31:48
It no more. And after Solomon, the Violet men afflicting, it are inside of the Kingdom.
31:56
And you look at the kings in the north. The kingdom that's called Israel. You look at the kings of the northern kingdom. For hundreds of years. Pick a king, go read first and second Kings, And if it's a king in the north, One thing is guaranteed. They were horrible, Wicked evil Kings.
32:19
Without exception, there's not a single good King in the northern kingdom. And so you look like, well, God will be with them. This is their Civil War, right? So, David's, Throne, immediately after his son, there's not Civil War, I thought this Throne would be established forever. God, A king in the north.
32:37
It is not a king in the north. And what ultimately ends up happening to the king. In the, to the northern kingdom, they get taken over Senator Exile, gone forever. The southern Kingdom. What we would call the kingdom of Judah. Does a little better. Over the whole course of their history, they have like Five.
33:00
Good Kings. Okay, someone we know Jaden is named after one, Jaden, Josiah. Josiah was a good King in Judah. His son couldn't keep his act together. There were a few good kings in the southern Kingdom But ultimately the same idolatry, trials, troubles and strife come in In the southern Kingdom as well is taken into captivity into Exile made slaves.
33:28
And now we look around. And think.
33:36
All God's promises fail. God, you promised a king. We don't even have a kingdom. Okay, you promised forever? It didn't even make it past Solomon. Because you promised peace and rest in the land and we are over here, living in Babylonian captivity. Now, these promises Did not come true.
34:05
Where's the King?
34:10
Matthew chapter 1 starting in verse 1. The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ. The son of David.
34:24
He's our King.
34:28
The wise men knew it. Matthew chapter 2:1. Now, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod, the king was Herod the king. No, in the days of Herod. The King behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem saying Where is he? Who is born?
34:50
Of the Jews. The wise men knew it. They brought gold frankincense inmer. They brought gifts to the king.
35:05
Jesus, the one who sits on the throne forever.
35:14
Jesus is King forever.
35:20
Matthew. Chapter 22.
35:26
Jesus knew.
35:30
Who he was?
35:34
Matthew chapter 22:41, right? So, so, Matthew comes and he starts by saying, hey, just so, you know, Jesus is the son of David. Therefore, the promises to David, the son of Abraham. Therefore the promises to Abraham
35:47
The wise men knew hey, here's this one, he's born the king. Jesus was King. Jesus. Knew Jesus was King Matthew. 22 verse 41. Now, the Pharisees were gathered together. Jesus asked them, a question. Who, what do you think about the Christ? Whose son? Is he? They said to him the son of David, okay, the scribes and Pharisees knew the Messiah.
36:10
The deliverer would be the son of David. Why? Because it drives and Pharisees knew God's promises to David must come true. So there must be a son of David So they know there will be a son of David. So Jesus said to them, how is it them that David in the spirit calls him, Lord, Saying the Lord said to my Lord sit up my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.
36:33
If David calls him Lord, how is he? His son. Now, we're getting into some some crazy stuff. When you start looking at David's life and everything David wrote, David knew this promise for a son meant that David's son would be much greater and better than David. David in the promise, God even said you're gonna go to your fathers, you're going to die, but there will be a son who will be greater and better.
36:59
He will rule forever. So, how can David call that son, Lord? How can the son be greater than the father? No one was able to answer him a word. Jesus knew because he knew who he was So that we get to Acts chapter 3, The disciples knew Jesus was King.
37:28
As he's just letting the crowds have it at The Sermon of Pentecost Acts chapter 3, verse 32, this Jesus God raised up. And of that, we are all Witnesses. Okay, how do we know Jesus is greater? How can why can Jesus be the only King forever? Because he's firstborn of the dead Jesus in his resurrection rules and Reigns so that he will be King forever.
37:48
Verse 32, this Jesus God raised up and of that we are all Witnesses being therefore. Exalted at the right hand of God. God rules in heaven. Jesus is seated at the right hand. Seated on what seated on his throne. Like every good King is Revelation chapter 3.
38:11
In writing to the church in laodicea, the only
38:19
Like, Completely awful church, right? The context of that. I I've preached a sermon on this to the whole BFC before like if we look at laodicea they were a messed up. Of all the churches, they were the worst. There's one debatable one, but they were the worst. But to this church, that conquers Revelation chapter 3 verse 21.
38:42
The one who conquers. I will grant him. To sit with me. On my throne. As I also conquered and sat down with my father on his throne, Jesus is our King. In his rule, we find peace, restoration, and healing in his rule that is eternal and forever. We find all of the hope and Grace and goodness.
39:10
That we need, there is peace for us lasting peace. No strong men can come against us. We are safe and secure, our King has conquered. All of our enemies because our King is the one who established a nation that is blessed. And is a blessing. And our King is the one who followed the law perfectly.
39:33
And our King is the one who crushed the head of the serpent, our King, our Lord and our savior is the one who fulfills all of the promises of God.
39:50
And he will return.
39:56
Our King rules forever. And one day, he will trample out the wine, press of the wrath of God Almighty.
40:06
And so, as we come and remember this Advent season, the first coming of Our Savior, do not forget our King will return. Of this, we can be sure. Let's pray.
