Intro: Question, Experience, Story
“Though he came humbly, wrapped in swaddling clothes, His true identity was far beyond what human eyes could see”.
If the creator of everything (Jesus) humbled himself to come and serve his creation, who are we as the creation to not humble ourselves and serve our creator?
Whose Identity and dominion do you live under?
Luke undertook to compile a narrative of the things that had been accomplished in their midst in order to provide certainty concerning the things that have been taught about Jesus. Certainty! There is a word that is not realized in many areas of our lives today. The days of Luke were no different…
The book of Luke starts off with the account of a priest named Zechariah, you know what his name means, “God remembers”. What a way to start, “God Remembers”, His promises, His Word, His people, etc. It is a call for us to be reminded that God remembers us as well…This morning we recounted the difference that the gift of a saviour made in the lives of…
Elizabeth, Joseph, the shepherds, Jairus’ daughter, the woman with the Alabaster Jar, the disciples, and Mary. Has that same gift made a difference in your life
“How shall I know this? How will this be?
Passage of Scripture:
Is it Possible: “The gift of Jesus (Forgiveness and Purpose)”
Summary/Point: Is it really possible to get the gift we want at Christmas
Illustration: Do you remember the gift you really wanted, the one you asked for, or the one that surprised you the most? When I was in grade 6-7 I asked for a paire of Nike Air Baskeball shoes
A: “j” (vs. )
A: “j” (vs. )
Elizabeth and Mary- Age, stage in life (vs.)
Too old for this
Mary, barely old enought to get into trouble, much less have a baby
Joseph/Disciples- Occupation (vs.)
I am supposed to be the guy with the tools, not the guy with the saviour!
We were fisherman, tax collectors, men of the land.
but in His presence, we were more- so much more
Shepherds- unnoticed (vs.)
Why us? We’re just shepherds! nobody even notices us unless their sheep go missing…
I have never felt so important in my life!
Jarius’ Daughter- Alone (vs.)
“The world around me slipping from the light. In the darkness, I felt so far away, not knowing if I’s see another day.”
Jesus gives her life!
The Woman with the Alabaster Jar- Suffering in Shame (vs.)
“What a waste! what a foolish act
They judged me, condemned me time and time again
Your sins are forgiven
Application/Implications:
Renew the Mind (the Scriptures):
What caught your attention in this section?
Which verses or words would you like to study a little more this week?
Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
Is it truly possible to to bring your identity to Jesus and leave completely different than when you came? Is it possible?
“How can I return to my flocks after this? How can I keep this to myself? The world will never be the same, and neither will I”
I’m living proof of his power and his light…His love restored me, gave me another chance, to walk this earth again, in His light, to dance”
“I am leaving here changed, walking in his light, and I’ll carry this love with me, day and night!
So what is this gift that Jesus offers, forgiveness and purpose. But like any gift, you have to receive it for it to make a difference in your life! You can know all about, have it in your house, and even talk about it with others, but unless you receive it, the gift is not yours.
Enlist the Body (Words, actions, emotions):
Summary/Point:
Illustration: So what about my Nike Air shoes. Well I got them and I wore them, and then I grew out of them. Yet I kept them for years! Why because I wanted to have them in case I made them NBA. The shoes were not just a gift for me, they became an identity that would shape the way I live even till today. Man, if a pair of shoes can do that, imagine what the gift of forgiveness and purpose can do.
