Sermon Title: "The Faith That Draws from the Master's Table"

Scripture Text: Matthew 15:27 (KJV)

"And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

Introduction: The Power of Faith at the Master's Table

Life often presents us with moments where the odds seem insurmountable, and our prayers feel unanswered. In those moments, we are tempted to retreat, to give up hope, or to conclude that perhaps God’s blessings are reserved for someone else. Yet, it is in these times that true faith emerges—not the faith that gives up, but the faith that presses on, humbly yet boldly, even when circumstances seem hopeless.
In Matthew 15:21-28, we encounter a Canaanite woman who exemplifies such faith. She is an outsider—a Gentile, from a region despised by the Jews. By societal and religious standards of her time, she had no right to approach Jesus, much less make a request of Him. Yet, her desperation drove her to the feet of the Savior. She was not deterred by silence, cultural barriers, or even seeming rejection. Her faith was tenacious and unyielding, and as a result, Jesus marveled at her persistence and granted her request.
This account challenges us to examine our own approach to faith. Do we persist when God seems silent? Do we press forward when the world tells us to stop? Do we trust that even the smallest touch of His grace—the crumbs from the Master's table—are more than enough to meet our deepest needs?
In today’s message, we will explore seven lessons from this powerful encounter, supported by Scripture and enriched with illustrations, to inspire a faith that overcomes obstacles and reaches the heart of God. Let us prepare to learn from this woman’s remarkable faith and draw closer to the One who has more than enough for all who come to Him.
As we begin, reflect on this question: What kind of faith are you bringing to the Master’s table today?

1. A Persistent Cry (Matthew 15:22)

Key Scripture: "And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil."
Supporting Scriptures:
Psalm 34:17: "The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles."
Jeremiah 33:3: "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not."
Romans 12:12: "Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer."
Illustration: A child crying out repeatedly for their parent's attention won't stop until they are heard. Similarly, this woman cried, “Have mercy on me, O Lord!”
Lesson: Faith perseveres even when the response is delayed. The woman's persistence is a model of prayer that refuses to give up.
Supporting Scripture: Luke 18:1-8 (The parable of the persistent widow).

2. Faith Beyond Silence (Matthew 15:23)

Jesus did not answer her initially, yet she didn’t leave.
Key Scripture: "But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us."
Supporting Scriptures:
Lamentations 3:25-26: "The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord."
Habakkuk 2:3: "For the vision is yet for an appointed time...though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry."
Psalm 27:14: "Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord."
Illustration: A seed planted underground doesn't immediately show growth, but beneath the surface, it’s alive. Likewise, silence doesn't mean inactivity.
Lesson: God’s silence is an opportunity for growth, not rejection.
Supporting Scripture: Isaiah 40:31 ("They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength").

3. Breaking Barriers of Rejection (Matthew 15:24)

Jesus stated His mission was to Israel, yet she didn’t see this as a rejection but as a challenge to press further.
Key Scripture: "But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
Supporting Scriptures:
Galatians 3:28: "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."
John 4:9: "Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans."
Ephesians 2:14: "For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us."
Illustration: A locked door often has a key. She sought to find the key to unlock Jesus’ response.
Lesson: Faith doesn’t retreat in the face of cultural, racial, or religious barriers.
Supporting Scripture: Acts 10:34-35 ("God is no respecter of persons...").

4. A Humble Heart (Matthew 15:26-27)

The woman’s humility is evident in her response to Jesus' metaphor about dogs.
Key Scripture: "And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."
Supporting Scriptures:
Psalm 51:17: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."
Proverbs 22:4: "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life."
Philippians 2:8: "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
Illustration: A man walking into a palace doesn’t demand a throne; he bows in honor of the king. Humility opens doors.
Lesson: True faith approaches God with humility, acknowledging His sovereignty.
Supporting Scripture: James 4:10 ("Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up").

5. The Power of Small Blessings (Matthew 15:27)

The woman understood that even the crumbs from the Master’s table were enough.
Key Scripture: "Yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."
Supporting Scriptures:
Zechariah 4:10: "For who hath despised the day of small things?"
Matthew 13:31-32: "The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed...which indeed is the least of all seeds, but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs."
1 Corinthians 1:27-29: "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty."
Illustration: A single spark can ignite a great fire. Crumbs of God’s blessing are powerful.
Lesson: God’s "crumbs" are more potent than the world’s greatest riches.
Supporting Scripture: John 6:9-13 (The boy’s small lunch fed thousands).

6. Faith That Moves Jesus (Matthew 15:28)

Jesus marveled at her faith, declaring, “Great is thy faith.”
Key Scripture: "Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt."
Supporting Scriptures:
Matthew 8:10: "When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said...I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel."
Mark 9:23: "Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth."
2 Chronicles 16:9: "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him."
Illustration: A magnet draws metal closer. Her faith acted as a magnet that drew blessings from Jesus.
Lesson: Great faith captures the attention of heaven.
Supporting Scripture: Hebrews 11:6 ("Without faith it is impossible to please Him").

7. Faith Leads to Fulfillment (Matthew 15:28)

Her daughter was healed that very hour.
Key Scripture: "And her daughter was made whole from that very hour."
Supporting Scriptures:
Psalm 107:20: "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions."
Mark 11:22-24: "Have faith in God...What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."
Hebrews 10:23: "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)."
Illustration: A runner who perseveres to the finish line receives the prize. Her persistence paid off.
Lesson: Faith that perseveres leads to divine intervention and fulfillment.
Supporting Scripture: Mark 11:24 ("What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them").

Conclusion

The Canaanite woman’s story is a testimony of how humble, persistent, and bold faith can draw blessings even when circumstances seem discouraging. Are we willing to persist, remain humble, and trust in God’s timing? Let’s seek not only the crumbs but the fullness of what God has prepared for those who believe.
Closing Challenge: Reflect on your faith journey. Are you persistent in prayer, humble in approach, and confident in God’s power? Let the faith of this woman inspire you to trust in God beyond limitations.
