The Rorschach Test:
The test is used to: Examine personality traits and emotional functioning Detect underlying thought disorders, especially when patients are reluctant to describe their thinking processes Provide data about cognition and personality variables
How it works The test is based on the idea that people attribute meaning to shapes and objects, looking for familiar signs and symbols. A person's interpretation of an inkblot suggests their state of mind and field of reference.
Matthew 11:7–9
NKJV
As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
A mild mannered person is conceptualized as a reed shaken by the wind
The people of the day were expecting a soft mild-mannered and refined prophet. They were shocked to find a wild man who wore camels hair, ate locusts and honey and called out people’s sin
That’s what a lot of people want their pastor to be - mild, soft, non-confrontational - like a soft noodle or a woobie blanket
A lot of people want Jesus to be like that too - able to be trampled on and used only for their personal gain, having no strong definite stance on anything, agreeable and sensitive to their feelings so much that He would never go against them.
Isaiah 53:2
NKJV
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
Luke 19:41–44
NKJV
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Matthew 2:1–2
NKJV
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
Worship:
to designate the custom of prostrating oneself before persons and kissing their feet or the hem of their garment, the ground, etc.; the Persians did this in the presence of their deified king, and the Greeks before a divinity or someth. holy.) to express in attitude or gesture one’s complete dependence on or submission to a high authority figure, (fall down and) worship, do obeisance to, prostrate oneself before, do reverence to, welcome respectfully,
Revelation 4:8–11
NKJV
The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”
We can miss what we should see when we are looking for what we want rather than what really is.
Specifically, we can miss understanding who Jesus truly is when we are looking for something He is not.
Acts 2:36
NKJV
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Let’s behold Jesus as He truly is - BOTH Savior & Lord
