Sermon: "Let Us Go to Bethlehem: Returning to Simplicity"

Introduction

Shalom, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. Today we will once again reflect on the extraordinary story from Luke 2:8-20, but with a perspective that leads us to a deeper understanding of how God chose simple shepherds to be the first witnesses of the Savior's birth. Our sermon theme today is: "Let Us Go to Bethlehem: Returning to Simplicity."

1. The Situation at That Time: Expectation Laden with Misconceptions

At the time of Jesus' birth, the nation of Israel was under Roman occupation. They lived in oppression, longing for a Messiah. Their expectation, especially among the Pharisees, was for a mighty hero who would be born in the center of power—Jerusalem—and bring political liberation and victory over their enemies.

However, God revealed a different plan. The prophet Micah had prophesied:

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel..." (Micah 5:2).

The Messiah was not born in a grand palace but in a humble manger in Bethlehem. Even the teachers of the Law and Pharisees, who knew this prophecy, chose to disregard God's plan because it did not align with their expectations.

2. The Shepherds: Symbols of Simplicity and Obedience

Unlike the Pharisees, the shepherds were simple people. They had no high social status, let alone deep knowledge of the Torah or prophetic scriptures. However, when the angel of the Lord appeared to them, they responded quickly and with faith.

The angel said:

"Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." (Luke 2:10-11).

Their response was remarkable:

"Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." (Luke 2:15).

Without hesitation, they went immediately, demonstrating faith and obedience that were simple yet extraordinary.

3. Bethlehem: The House of Bread and Source of Life

Bethlehem means "House of Bread," and it was here that Jesus, the Bread of Life, was born. Jesus said:

"I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry..." (John 6:35).

Bethlehem symbolizes God's provision and life source. God chose a small and simple place to reveal His great plan, showing that:

God works through simple things.

Salvation is not about human status or strength but a gift of grace to those who believe.

4. Lessons from the Contrast Between Shepherds and Pharisees

The Shepherds: They did not have deep religious knowledge, but their hearts were open to receiving the good news. Their simplicity became a gateway for God to work.

The Pharisees: Despite knowing God’s word and the prophecies, they were trapped by pride and human expectations, failing to see God’s work.

This story teaches us that:

True faith comes from a heart willing to believe and obey.

Simplicity of heart opens the door to divine experiences.

Human expectations often hinder understanding God’s plans.

5. Application: "Let Us Go to Bethlehem" in Our Lives

How can we apply the call "Let us go to Bethlehem" in our lives today?

Return to the Simplicity of God’s Word.

Do not get caught up in theological complexity, but focus on the essence of God’s Word: Jesus is the Savior.

Come to Jesus as the Source of Life.

Bethlehem, the House of Bread, reminds us that only Jesus, the Bread of Life, can satisfy our spiritual hunger.

Obey God’s Call.

Like the shepherds, we are called to respond to God’s Word with real action. Leave our "fields," or comfort zones, and come to Jesus with simple faith.

Conclusion

Brothers and sisters, the story of the shepherds teaches us not to underestimate simplicity. God chose simple people and a humble place to reveal His salvation plan. Today, the invitation "Let us go to Bethlehem" is for all of us. Come to Jesus, the Bread of Life, with a humble and faithful heart.

Leave behind human expectations and receive the good news with a simple heart. Let our lives be a testimony, like the shepherds, glorifying God and sharing the joy of salvation with the world.

Pembukaan

Shalom, saudara-saudara yang dikasihi dalam Kristus. Hari ini kita akan merenungkan kembali kisah luar biasa dari Lukas 2:8-20, tetapi dengan sudut pandang yang membawa kita pada pemahaman mendalam tentang bagaimana para gembala sederhana dipilih oleh Allah untuk menjadi saksi pertama kelahiran Juruselamat. Tema khotbah kita hari ini adalah: "Mari Kita Pergi ke Betlehem: Kembali ke Kesederhanaan."

1. Situasi Saat Itu: Penantian yang Sarat Ekspektasi

Pada waktu kelahiran Yesus, bangsa Israel berada di bawah penjajahan Romawi. Mereka hidup di tengah penindasan yang membuat mereka mendambakan seorang Mesias. Ekspektasi mereka, terutama kaum Farisi, adalah seorang pahlawan perkasa yang akan lahir di pusat kekuasaan, yaitu Yerusalem, dan membawa pembebasan politik serta kemenangan besar atas musuh-musuh mereka.

Namun, Allah menunjukkan jalan yang berbeda. Nabi Mikha telah menubuatkan:

"Tetapi engkau, hai Betlehem Efrata, yang terkecil di antara kaum-kaum Yehuda, daripadamu akan bangkit bagi-Ku seorang yang akan memerintah Israel..." (Mikha 5:2).

Mesias tidak lahir di istana megah, tetapi di palungan sederhana di Betlehem. Bahkan, ahli Taurat dan Farisi yang mengetahui nubuat ini memilih untuk mengabaikan rencana Allah karena ekspektasi mereka sendiri.

2. Para Gembala: Simbol Kesederhanaan dan Ketaatan

Berbeda dengan kaum Farisi, para gembala adalah orang-orang yang sederhana. Mereka tidak memiliki status sosial yang tinggi, apalagi pengetahuan mendalam tentang Taurat atau nubuat para nabi. Namun, ketika malaikat Tuhan menampakkan diri kepada mereka, mereka merespons dengan cepat dan penuh iman.

Malaikat berkata:

"Jangan takut, sebab sesungguhnya aku memberitakan kepadamu kesukaan besar untuk seluruh bangsa: Hari ini telah lahir bagimu Juruselamat, yaitu Kristus, Tuhan, di kota Daud." (Lukas 2:10-11).

Respon mereka sangat luar biasa:

"Marilah kita pergi ke Betlehem untuk melihat apa yang terjadi di sana, seperti yang diberitahukan Tuhan kepada kita." (Lukas 2:15).

Tanpa keraguan, mereka segera pergi, menunjukkan iman dan ketaatan yang sederhana namun luar biasa.

3. Betlehem: Kota Roti dan Sumber Kehidupan

Betlehem berarti "Kota Roti," dan di tempat inilah Yesus, Sang Roti Hidup, lahir. Yesus berkata:

"Akulah roti hidup; barangsiapa datang kepada-Ku, ia tidak akan lapar lagi..." (Yohanes 6:35).

Betlehem melambangkan sumber kehidupan dan pemeliharaan dari Allah. Allah memilih tempat yang kecil dan sederhana untuk menyatakan rencana besar-Nya, menunjukkan bahwa:

Allah bekerja melalui hal-hal sederhana. Keselamatan bukan tentang status atau kekuatan manusia, tetapi anugerah yang diberikan kepada mereka yang mau percaya.

4. Pelajaran dari Kontras Gembala dan Farisi

Para Gembala: Mereka tidak memiliki pengetahuan agama yang mendalam, tetapi hati mereka terbuka untuk menerima kabar baik. Kesederhanaan mereka menjadi pintu masuk bagi Allah untuk bekerja. Orang Farisi: Meski mengetahui firman Tuhan dan nubuat para nabi, mereka terlalu terjebak dalam kesombongan dan ekspektasi manusiawi sehingga gagal melihat pekerjaan Allah.

Kisah ini mengajarkan kita bahwa:

Iman sejati berasal dari hati yang mau percaya dan taat. Kesederhanaan hati membuka jalan untuk pengalaman ilahi. Ekspektasi manusia sering kali menjadi penghalang untuk memahami rencana Allah.

5. Aplikasi: "Mari Kita Pergi ke Betlehem" dalam Kehidupan Kita

Bagaimana kita menerapkan panggilan "Mari Kita Pergi ke Betlehem" dalam kehidupan kita hari ini?

Kembali kepada Kesederhanaan Firman Tuhan.

Jangan terlalu terjebak dalam pengetahuan teologi yang kompleks, tetapi fokuslah pada inti firman Tuhan: Yesus adalah Juruselamat. Datang kepada Yesus sebagai Sumber Kehidupan.

Betlehem, Kota Roti, mengingatkan kita bahwa hanya Yesus, Sang Roti Hidup, yang dapat memuaskan kebutuhan rohani kita. Taat pada Panggilan Allah.

Seperti para gembala, kita dipanggil untuk merespons firman Tuhan dengan tindakan nyata. Tinggalkan "padang" kita, yaitu zona nyaman, dan datang kepada Yesus dengan iman yang sederhana.

Penutup

Saudara-saudara, kisah para gembala mengajarkan kita untuk tidak meremehkan kesederhanaan. Allah memilih orang-orang sederhana dan tempat yang sederhana untuk menyatakan rencana keselamatan-Nya. Hari ini, undangan "Mari Kita Pergi ke Betlehem" berlaku bagi kita semua. Datanglah kepada Yesus, Sang Roti Hidup, dengan hati yang rendah hati dan penuh iman.

Tinggalkan ekspektasi manusiawi kita dan terimalah kabar baik dengan hati yang sederhana. Biarlah hidup kita menjadi kesaksian seperti para gembala, memuliakan Allah dan membagikan kabar sukacita kepada dunia.
