2 PETER 3:8-13
2 PETER 3:8-13
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
During his 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy often closed his speeches with the story of Colonel Davenport, the Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives. One day in 1789, the sky of Hartford darkened ominously, and some of the representatives, glancing out the windows, feared the end was at hand. Quelling a clamor for immediate adjournment, Davenport rose and said, “The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought.” Rather than fearing what is to come, we are to be faithful till Christ returns. Instead of fearing the dark, we’re to be lights as we watch and wait.
1- THE TIMING OF THE LORD
1- THE TIMING OF THE LORD
A- PETER TELLS US THAT GOD’S TIMING IS NOT OUR TIMING.
A- PETER TELLS US THAT GOD’S TIMING IS NOT OUR TIMING.
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.
B- PETER TELLS US THAT THE LORD HAS A DESIRE FOR HIS PEOPLE.
B- PETER TELLS US THAT THE LORD HAS A DESIRE FOR HIS PEOPLE.
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
11 Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.
11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?
C H Spurgeon spares no words commenting that… "You are afraid of damnation, but you are not afraid of sinning. You are afraid of being cast into the pit, but not afraid to harden your hearts against God's commands. It is not the soul's state that troubles you, but hell. If hell were extinguished, your repentance would be extinguished. Be not deceived. Examine yourselves whether you are in the faith. Ask yourself if you have that which is "repentance unto life," for you may humble yourselves for a time, and yet never repent before God.)
2- THE CLEANSING FROM THE LORD
2- THE CLEANSING FROM THE LORD
A- PETER TELLS US THAT THE LORD WILL COME QUICKLY AND THE THINGS OF THE WORLD WILL PERISH.
A- PETER TELLS US THAT THE LORD WILL COME QUICKLY AND THE THINGS OF THE WORLD WILL PERISH.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.
B- PETER TELLS US THERE WILL BE A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH.
B- PETER TELLS US THERE WILL BE A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH.
13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.
ONLY THE RIGHTEOUS CAN ENTER
27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
3- WAITING FOR THE LORD

A- PETER TELL US TO PURSUE HOLINESS AND GODLINESS
A- PETER TELL US TO PURSUE HOLINESS AND GODLINESS
11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
B- PETER TELLS US TO ANTICIPATE THE COMING OF THE LORD.
B- PETER TELLS US TO ANTICIPATE THE COMING OF THE LORD.
12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.
