Using God’s Word to Revive our Souls.
Using God’s Word to Revive our Souls.
As I introduce our passage today, please turn to the Book of Psalm Chapter 19. Today we are going to be focusing on verses 7-14.
Heath Lambert writes about what the bible tells us, “God tells us what it means to be a human. God will use His Word to diagnose the problems within us, and then He gives us the answers in Scripture. Through our faith in Christ, God reveals to us how He authorizes our transformative process” including our passage today which helps to provide Spiritual CPR for our souls.
Psalm 19:7-14.
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
Up in V:1, we are reminded that this is a Psalm of David.
1. David writes that the law of the LORD is perfect or blameless. LORD / יַהְוֶה or Yahweh. That God’s law is the cure for the depraved and depressed state of a man’s soul.
Why do we need reviving in the first place? We have a soul problem, since the Fall of man back in Genesis3:1-7, man has had a soul problem. The Fall left us all corrupt and damaged, sinful to say it best.
Because of this corruption, we are in dire need of reviving. In order for our souls to be revived, restored, and or converted it must only be treated by God’s Word. There are no band aide fixes for this one.
Braswell tells us “there is no other treatment by which we must expect to correct the problems of the soul which sin has caused.” Other than the perfect Word of God as we read in Psalm 23:3; 2 Timothy 3:16
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
c. If we look closer at the word “revive” or “reviving” the language used in this passage is that of restoring order from disorder and decay, Psalm 80:19 “Restore us, O Lord God of hosts! Let your face shine, that we may be saved!” “The Law, by instructing men, restores them from moral blindness to the light which is theirs by nature, and, as a further consequence, in many cases, restores them from sin to righteousness.”
2. God’s Word helps to renew our minds.
a. In V:7b “the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple”
Here David is telling us what it is that Scripture does for us.
Tells us who God is.
Who man is.
The fall of man.
Person and work of Jesus Christ to save mankind.
How the Holy Spirit regenerates us.
Future Glory we have in Jesus Christ.
b. We can read this in a couple verses. Where the main point of each of them, and of Scripture as a whole is to transform us.
Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me.
2. Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
c. If we do not meditate on His word, and store it is our hearts, we will remain in a state of foolishness and corruptness.
3. Our hearts Rejoice in God’s Word.
a. God’s Word also helps us to rejoice within our hearts. Psalm 19:8a “the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.”
The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy;
Gods word is true, pure, sufficient, and authoritative from Genesis 1:1 all the way through Revelation 22:21 to lead our lives, and guide is from and keep us from sinful actions.
We should be renewed in mind and soul by reading God’s Word.
Meditating on His word day and night, results in our rejoicing.
to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
This along with Romans 12:2, His word, and the Holy Spirits work within us should help to renew our minds.
The impact and results of sin are many. Sorrow, anxiety, depression, lostness, grief, and many others we can name.
Giving our concerns to Christ, via the Holy Spirit
pray without ceasing,
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
As we allow the Bible to guide our daily walk with God, we slowly begin to understand biblical truths that guide us to true joyfulness and rejoicing in Him. He begins to start Reviving our Souls!!
Psalm 119:1 “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord!”
Psalm 128:1 “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!”
4. His Word restores our sight to Him. Psalm 19:8b “the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes”
a. We see throughout Scripture that sin blinds believer and unbelievers.
1. Luke tell of this in the book of Acts, Chapter 9, Saul’s conversion passage.
2. We can also see this principle where Paul writes to the church at Corinth, in
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
b. Sin blinds us from seeing the Light of God and His word.
For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
Job 5:14 and 12:25 talks of how sinfulness makes people reach for the dark, even in the light of day.
c. So when we talk to others of God, or take in the bible in by reading our selves, like 1 Corinthians 2:5 tells us “so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”
our strength comes from God not man, Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
Only the Holy Spirit can help to illuminate God’s word. We come to a stronger faith by the removing of the scales from our eyes like Pauls in the conversion passage in Acts 9.
5. God’s Word Represses sinful desires.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.
David writes here asking God to help him with sinfulness.
When we seek counsel from others, pastors, church leaders, fellow believers, we are looking for wise speech from those people. David helps us understand that we need to be in the Word of God to ensure we aren’t allowing sinfulness to gain any foothold on our lives.
b. Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,” Christ is revealed in scripture. This reading and training in His word helps us to see the revealed Christ within, and to push aside sinful desires.
c. The writer of Hebrews tells us this
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
i. Here we see that being in the word of God helps us, along with us being able to help others, the Word of God, convicts and helps us to push aside sinfulness which lies within the heart.
6. How does this apply to us?
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
i. Study’s (Lifeway, Barna, Pew) show that anywhere from 11-32% of Christians read the bible daily.
See where the disparity is folks? If we are to use the Bible and God’s word to help revive our souls, how do we answer the questions about the percentages?
a. If God and His word are sufficient enough for the David’s, Paul’s, Timothy’s, why is it not enough for us today?
b. Set a plan to be in His word everyday, whether a reading plan, passage or book study.
We have access to resources to help you plan this reading out.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
b. God’s Word IS sufficient to guide us all to a better life. Giving CPR to and reviving our souls.
Will you accept Him, allow him to rest in your heart, and guide your life from today into the future.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
