A Savior is Born

Luke 2:1–20 NASB 95
Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.
Introduction:
What Christmas means to you and me
Family, Gifts, Decorations
Memories.
These are blessings from God- all things that are good. Yet as we read this story this was not what God sent into the world. He sent His son the Savior of the World
10,000 Sermon Illustrations Our Greatest Need

Our Greatest Need

If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator;

If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist;

If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist;

If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer;

But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.

Today is all about God providing our greatest need through His son.
His Son Jesus- From this passage we will see three truths that come from the Hope of Christ
Message:
Good news and great joy for all people (vs 10-11)
John 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
Jesus has come that all will know about the hope that is found in Christ
Historical Setting
It was not a good time for anyone
Herod was evil- it was not about times being good it was about God’s plan and timing
Relative to know
Jesus has come to be good new and great joy beyond what is going on around you and me.
Remember He is our greatest need and so much more
Yes there are truly amazing things we get to celebrate this season- family, friends, new beginnings, and yet also there are those around us that it isn’t an easy time to celebrate.
Hope can only be found in Christ all else is fading.
Think about for a second with me- life before Christ came on the scene- For Israel- it was a standard of obeying the laws with knowing that you were incapable of living up to them.
Jesus took on for us God’s plan of redemption became what we could not be, in order that we would be given life and restoration into a realtionship with God.
2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Part of the good news that was being proclaimed is that God promise of our salvation was being fulfilled
It is good new knowing God keeps His word
He does it His way!
It is through Christ that God is pleased with man ( VS 13-14)
Christ coming meant peace for humanity who recieved the messiah
We are at war and Christ can only provide peace
Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
1 Corinthians 15:57 “but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Remember He is our greatest need and so much more
As we study Romans we are learning that it is by faith we please God
Romans 1:17 “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.””
The Gift is already available- it is a part of God’s plan- this is where Jesus is so much more.
Romans 10:9–10 “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
The Wisemen (VS 15, VS 17, VS 20)
Lets Go and see-
Faith what the Lord has made known
God reveals Himself
Gave a report
Unless God tell us other wise what He is giving us needs to be shared, mainly concerning His son!
Glorifying and Praising
Esteem God- place Him where he must be in our lives
Worship- in His mighty power we worship Him capable of all things
Hebrews 12:28 “Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;”
Mary (VS 19)
Treasured in her heart
Reflect on the Goodness of God
Philippians 4:8–9 “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
Meditate on it
You will soon forget
Psalm 1:2 “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.”
Conclusion: Our Savior has come: Our Greatest need and so much more
I know this Christmas season may have been a blur, or even difficult, but today may we think on this
10,000 Sermon Illustrations Can This Be Christmas?

What’s all this hectic rush and worry?

Where go these crowds who run and curry?

Why all the lights—the Christmas trees?

The jolly “fat man,” tell me please!

Why, don’t you know? This is the day

For parties and for fun and play;

Why this is Christmas!

So this is Christmas, do you say?

But where is Christ this Christmas day?

Has He been lost among the throng?

His voice drowned out by empty song?

No. He’s not here—you’ll find Him where

Some humble soul now kneels in prayer,

Who knows the Christ of Christmas.

But see the many aimless thousands

Who gather on this Christmas Day,

Whose hearts have never yet been opened,

Or said to Him, “Come in to stay.”

In countless homes the candles burning,

In countless hearts expectant yearning

For gifts and presents, food and fun,

And laughter till the day is done.

But not a tear of grief or sorrow

For Him so poor He had to borrow

A crib, a colt, a boat, a bed

Where He could lay His weary head.

I’m tired of all this empty celebration,

Of feasting, drinking, recreation;

I’ll go instead to Calvary.

And there I’ll kneel with those who know

The meaning of that manger low,

And find the Christ—this Christmas.

I leap by faith across the years

To that great day when He appears

The second time, to rule and reign,

To end all sorrow, death, and pain.

In endless bliss we then shall dwell

With Him who saved our souls from hell,

And worship Christ—not Christmas!
