Prayer for Blessing at the Start of the New Year by John Newton

400 Prayers for Preachers Prayer for Blessing at the Start of a New Year

1 NOW, gracious Lord, thine arm reveal,

And make thy glory known;

Now let us all thy presence feel,

And soften hearts of stone!

2 Help us to venture near thy throne,

And plead a Saviour’s name;

For all that we can call our own,

Is vanity and shame.

3 From all the guilt of former sin

May mercy set us free;

And let the year we now begin,

Begin and end with thee.

4 Send down thy Spirit from above,

That saints may love thee more;

And sinners now may learn to love,

Who never lov’d before.

5 And when before thee we appear,

In our eternal home,

May growing numbers worship here,

And praise thee in our room.

Scripture Reading: James 4:13-17.

James 4:13–17
“13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”
14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. For you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.
15 Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”
16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.
17 So for one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, for him it is sin.”
On New Year’s Day, I grew up eating black eyed peas and making a resolution.

The New Testament teaches us not to trust in ourselves but in God who empowers our choices.

Jeremiah 10:23 NASB 2020
23 I know, Lord, that a person’s way is not in himself, Nor is it in a person who walks to direct his steps.

The Power of Action in My Life is Not in Myself But in the One Who Provides Me With the Very Life that I Live!

James 4:13 NASB 2020
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”

Where Did Your Life Begin?

God so loves you...

The New King James Version John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

You must now yield your life to Jesus.

Galatians 2:20 NASB 2020
20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

This Present Life Is Temporary. Like the year 2024, all of our problems. The evils that have vexed us. Every tear dropped from our eyes. It will all be over soon.

James 4:14 NASB 2020
14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. For you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.

Since our life is a vapor, how much better to glorify God who gave us the breath of life?

Genesis 2:7 NASB 2020
7 Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.
Ecclesiastes 12:7 NASB 2020
7 then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.
James 2:26 NASB 2020
26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

Living an Ego-Centric versus Christo-Centric Life.

James 4:15–16 NASB 2020
15 Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.

Tomorrow is not Promised.

Everything we do is by God’s permission.

What does God give us permission?

James 4:17 NASB 2020
17 So for one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, for him it is sin.
It is always God’s will to do the righteous thing.
When we know what the right thing to do is, and we do not do that thing, then that is a sin of omission. We OMIT doing God’s bidding.

God loves you.
God sent His So for you.
The Son of God died for you.
God raised His Son from the dead for you.
Will you lay your life down for the Son?
Galatians 2:20 NASB 2020
20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
