Title: The Precious Name
We have been teaching the last four weeks on key doctrinal songs or hymns that shaped and formed who we are and our understanding of God…
All in Him
Down from His glory
The Great I AM
Last week: The songs of Christmas
Today: The Precious Name
Take the name of Jesus with you, Child of sorrow and of woe; It will joy and comfort give you, Take it, then, where’er you go.
Take the name of Jesus ever, As a shield from every snare; If temptations round you gather, Breathe that holy name in prayer.
O the precious name of Jesus! How it thrills our souls with joy, When His loving arms receive us, And His songs our tongues employ!
At the name of Jesus bowing, Falling prostrate at His feet, King of kings in heaven we’ll crown Him, When our journey is complete.
Chorus: Precious name, O how sweet! Hope of earth and joy of heaven; Precious name, O how sweet! Hope of earth and joy of heaven.
Written by; Lydia Odell Baxter in 1870
Her life was a hard one, almost completely bed ridden as an adult she devoted her life to studying the Word of God and writing.
When visited, people would ask her how she could remain so cheerful in spite of her pain would respond; “I have a very special armour. I have the name of Jesus. When the tempter tries to make me blue or despondent, I mention the name of Jesus, and he can’t get through to me any more.”
That makes some of her words come alive…
God’s name reveals his nature and character!
When you read the OT, you find many different names of God
Each of them describing who he was and what he did.
Common names of God:
Elohim: The Powerful Creator
Jehovah-Rapha: The Devine Healer
El Shaddai: The Almighty God
These names reveal His nature, character and relationship with His people.
Important note: None of these where actual names, rather descriptive on a nameless God. God was nameless - a god named God. SO the used descriptive names based on relationship or needs.
Each of those names pointed to a time when the Name of God would be revealed.
Philippians 2:9 KJV 1900
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
The revelation of God’s name is an invitation to relationship with Him!
Other names:
Johovah-Jireh: the Lord will provide
Jehovah-Rapha: the Lord my healer
Jehovah-Nissi: the Lord my victory
Hehovah-Shalom: the Lord my peace
Jehovah-Raah: the Lord my shepherd
Jehovah-Tsdkenu (sad-keno): the Lord is my righteousness
Jehovah-Shamman: the Lord is present or the Lord is hear with me
The poeple of Israel was careful to honor the name of God, as should we!
Exodus 20:7 KJV 1900
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Not just verbally, but with your life and lifestyle!
Colossians 3:17 KJV 1900
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
This is the name that saves us!
Acts 4:12 KJV 1900
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Why we must ask the question of Mat28.19, what is the name?
What does Jesus mean?
Yahweh, our salvation.
Comes from the Hebrew word Yahweh = Yeshua or Joshua
Jesus, our salvation
Christmas story: Luke1.31, Mat1.20-21.
You shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save His people from their sins!
The time had come to tell this world the name of God!
The Saving Name
Before Jesus came, humanity was lost in sin.
No purpose, no hope, helpless because of our sin.
But Jesus came to save us from sin!
Romans 10:13 KJV 1900
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Like a man drowning, sees a man on the shore with his back to him call out for help, the man see him and throws a lifeline and saves him.
When does salvation come?
When the man on shore hears the call and throws the lifeline!
When we call on the name of Jesus
He turns his attention on us and extends salvation!
How? He took our place, died for us!
We were dead in sin but now are dead to sin!
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Like throwing off an old stained coat and putting on a new one, tailored for you!
1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
When he died, shed his blood for you - to wash your sins away!
Acts 2:38 KJV 1900
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Because he died for you, he now has the authority to take his sins from you!
When we call on his name, whether for sickness, need or salvation - he hears and answers!
Conclusion: What does it mean to call on the Name of the Lord?
Jesus’ name has power whether you shout it or whisper it!
How do you “call on the Name of the Lord”?
Just like my story of the drowning man…
Just like you would call to your spouse, children, friends or even a stranger…
Use your mouth to call out the name!
Blind Bartimaeus: Mark10.46-52 - Jesus, have mercy on me!
Just talk to him, even though you can see him!
Act of faith and belief!
John 14:14 KJV 1900
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Matthew 7:7 KJV 1900
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
