Text: Ephesians 5:31-32
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church."
Homily:
Marriage is a covenant, a sacred bond established by God. From the very beginning in Genesis, we see that God created marriage not merely as a social arrangement but as a reflection of His divine purposes. Marriage is rooted in God's design and is meant to display His glory.
In Ephesians, Paul reminds us that marriage points to a greater reality—the relationship between Christ and His church. Just as Christ sacrificially loves and sanctifies the church, so too are husbands called to love their wives selflessly. Likewise, wives are called to respect and support their husbands, modeling the church's devotion to Christ.
This covenantal union is not built on fleeting emotions or personal convenience but on the firm foundation of God's love and grace. In marriage, we are reminded daily of our need for the gospel. We are sinful and imperfect, yet God calls us to love one another with patience, humility, and forgiveness, just as Christ has loved us.
Marriage, then, is not about personal fulfillment alone but about glorifying God through a lifelong commitment to serve and love each other. It is a picture of grace—of two imperfect people, loved by a perfect Savior, living out His love in covenantal faithfulness.
As you reflect on marriage, whether you are married, preparing for marriage, or praying for others who are, let this profound truth guide your understanding: marriage is not merely about two people—it is about Christ and the gospel. May we all strive to live out this mystery with joy and faithfulness, to the glory of God.
