John 5:30-47. Witness? And glory? Eternal life?
Recap.
As we read the text today, you can see the big difference in Jesus’ life and who he lives for and how that witness about who send him and the Jews.
The first verse “I can do nothing on my own. Wow what a statement, - true, as Jesus said also apart from me you can do nothing. (Apart from God Jesus can do nothing). The more mature statement, opposed to the one that we hear from children, I can do it myself. (Often over confident and failing) I was thinking that is some of the reasons that people today are stressed and frustrated, they are trying to do things themselves apart form Jesus. Thinking on this statement. If the son of God made this, how much should we depend on Him, to be able to live the life God has for us?
Then all the people in despair are right, I can’t do anything, true, in yourself but the gospel is not held up by you but Jesus, so in Christ you are able to do what God has for you. (2x pride arrogant and fake humble).
Jesus is humble and listens to God, and judge, and his Judgment is just because he seeks not his own by the will of God that send him. (Do we seek what God will is in our life?).
The testimony /witness about Jesus. God and the scriptures.
Listing it out, Jesus saying if it is only me witnessing about myself the if was not true.
32 But God bears witness about Jesus – and that testimony is true.
33 John also doses, - but 34 Dose not receive testimony form man, - but points to john that people might repent as John spoke to the people to turn and get ready for Jesus. In 35 Jesus describing john as a lamp that gave light that people might rejoice, in God that was sending a Christ.
36 God bear testimony about Jesus in the works God send him to do and they are greater than Johns. The works Jesus does is the witness that God send Jesus. And Jesus in 37 say the Father who send me his voice you have never heard, and you have never seen him. (In other words, you don’t know him). And you don’t know his word/ in the sense that it is not abiding in you. How does Jesus know? 38b because they don’t believe the one God sent.
39. Jesus point out an error, that the Jews studying the scriptures to find eternal life – does not find it – because the scriptures are about Jesus and bare witness about him. (Deut 18 ppt. Psalms, gen 3. Prophets).
Not finding Jesus in the scriptures – Jesus say they, refuse to come to him that they may have life. (Instead chose darkness and hate the son and dose evil). (Studing the bible is about getting to know a personal God, if study of the bible is don’t for other reasons, then the people will miss who the bible is witnessing about). The bible/ OT is not what gives life it is the God that is witnessed about, and as Jesus said, if people see Jesus in them, often the will come to him, but failing to see/understand they witness about Jesus people will refuse to come to Jesus. And will not have life).
Who’s Glory?
41 Jesus will now talk about glory – explaining that Jesus did not come to get glory from people, but that his glory comes from doing Gods will, what he hears and sees the father doing. Not the praise of man.
42. Jesus knows that they don’t have the love of God within, (above (don’t trust in Jesus) and below glory to people). 43 Jesus wanting to glorify God, and come in the Fathers name, is rejected and not received. – Then he stated: if another comes in his own name, then the will receive him. (Jesus spaking for God that send him) Others come and speak for them self, is recived and enjoyed.) And they give glory to that person and one another.
That leads to 44. Where Jesus asks who can you believe? When you receive glory form one another? And don’t seek it from the only God? (it is hard to find God and see the witness for Jesus if as people we are seeking other people’s praise and glory, to validate and give us worth). Seeking glory from People, may stop us seeing God’s glory in Jesus.
45. Jesus points out that He will not accuse them to the Father, -there is on that will the one that they has set there hope in Moses. He will accuse them. Because they have not understood his writings. Because the point of Moses writings and the promise that he wrote about was Jesus. As Jesus points out in 46. If you believed in Moses you would believe me, for he wrote of me. PPT.
Concluding this passage Jesus then say: If you don’t believe what Moses wrote his writings, how will you believe my words? – (They can’t and will not).
Jesus words is that if you don’t believe in me, you don’t know the one who sent me, and you don’t know God or the scriptures and have misunderstood Moses. Who will judge you?
Who is Jesus? Do you live for God’s glory? Are you able to do anything? Do you have eternal life in Jesus? Do you live it out to his glory?
