Introduction: Have you ever thought about the end of your life?

-Paul is nearing the end of his life and he is giving his final words to his son in the faith

-The instruction is to make sure the Gospel is carried on

1. (V1) Charge you before God and Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead

Paul reminded Timothy that God was watching him, as was Jesus Christ, who will "judge" all people ("the living and the dead").

a) Charge in greek is to warn or testify

Acts 10:42 “And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead.”

b) Testify that God will judge the saved and the unsaved

2. (V2) Preach the Word

a) Preaching is to move a heart to action

b) When? In season and out of season, which means when its convenient or not

c) For pastors only?

The Great Commission:

Matthew 28:18–20 “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”

What is a disciple?

-The short answer: The word used in the New Testament for disciple is mathētēs. This word means learner or disciple and is a technical term for the followers of Jesus.

2.1 What should preaching consist of?

a) Convincing, rebuke, exhort, with longsuffering

Why longsuffering?

3. (V3) Because they will not endure sound doctrine

a) But according to their own desires

By definition, a disciple is a follower, one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another. A Christian disciple is a person who follows Jesus Christ and accepts and assists in the spreading of the good news of salvation through Him. Christian discipleship is the process by which disciples grow in the Lord Jesus Christ and are equipped by the indwelling Holy Spirit to overcome the pressures and trials of this present life and become more and more Christlike. This process requires believers to respond to the Holy Spirit’s prompting to examine their thoughts, words, and actions and compare them with the Word of God. This requires that we be in the Word daily—studying it, praying over it, and obeying it. In addition, we should always be ready to give testimony of the reason for the hope that is within us (1 Peter 3:15) and to disciple others to walk in His way.
