Matthew 6….2 Corinthians 8 (acts, romans, 1 cor.)

SET THE SCENE…

Chapter 1-2 “Birth of Jesus”

Chapter 3 “His Baptism in the Jordan”

Chapter 4 “Jesus tempted in the wilderness/…The calling of His first 4 disciples (2 sets of brothers Peter/Andrew and James/John)…They began ministering in Galilee…head toward Jerusalem…huge crowd begins following them”

Chapter 5-7 “Beatitudes/ Sermon on the Mount”

Beatitudes means (Latin) BLESSEDNESS

Jesus to give this sermon to the disciples and other crowds of people who had gathered.

He is going to BLESS them with the wisdom that can only come through the Lord….

Jesus begins to preach…

Chapter 5- teachings on inner righteousness

Chapter 6- is going to focus on outer righteousness (how we act)

Jesus discuss 4 actions in this text…Giving, Praying, Fasting, and Worrying

Today we are going to look at GIVING

Before we dive into the text i want to say 2 things…

LET THIS TEXT NOT OFFEND US…

Most of the time you hear this preached or written about, its preached with a warning label.

(Stepped on toes, Offensive)

Teachings on giving shouldn’t produce offense…they should produce worship…

I promise you will leave here worshipping today…

LETS NOT COMPLICATE THIS…

Todays sermon is going to be preached differently…

No theological deep dive…no building of tension…No funny intro…

We are going to hear God’s command for us…and we as His children are going to be obedient to it

How we best do this is relying on Gods word to guide us…

This morning we are going to all be fully discipled by the Lord…through His word

The way we usually do this is that we will read through the text…,then using original context we will pull out the application…

Today we are approaching this text the way we should approach all text…we are all going to sit at the feet of the Lord…(Indian Style like in 1st grade) and listen to Him teach us how to walk more like Him…

Then we are going to see in His word…exactly what the application looks like…how we apply this text… its all in the scripture this morning…

There is zero Tony in this sermon…I have drawn out nothing from this text on my own…this is just the teachings of the Lord in His word…the application that the church has lived out for 2,000 years…And an accountability that the Lord calls us to hold one another to in our giving…

READ V1-4,19-24

Jesus gives us 3 withouts to our giving…give without…

Give without Hypocrisy (v1-2a)

KJV = “give alms” - deeds of compassion and mercy

IN ORDER TO BE SEEN…

Hypocrisy is defined as “claiming to be something you are not”

We are led to give…

Notice Jesus doesn't say “if” but “when”…

Hypocrisy is giving like a righteous person…but doing it for an unrighteous reason…

DON’T BE A hypocrite

When you give just to be seen giving…you have no reward from the Lord.

Don’t give to just be seen…

Give without Announcement (v2b)

Next Jesus shows us an action of hypocrites…announcing that they gave…

A sign of a hypocrite…announcing their giving…

The Pharisees would do this…they would stand on street corners as “holy men” announcing their generosity

When you give just to announce that you gave…your reward is earthly.

Notice: Jesus keeps talking about these rewards…YOU CAN KEEP THE APPLAUSE…ILL TAKE A HEAVENLY REWARD…

Give without Hesitation (v3-4)

Everyone has a dominant hand, 90% of people in the world are right handed.

Your right hand knows things your left hand doesn't know.

How to write, throw a football, swing a golf club…

There are things your right hand can do without you thinking about in a second, that would take your left hand time…

DON’T THINK>>>JUST GIVE

But what if this happens…

This is a call for faith and trust in your giving…

God is pushing on your heart to give…GIVE!!!

It should be natural to give…like writing or throwing a ball… the Holy Spirit is going to move you to give…dont hesitate…obey

Give for God’s Glory (v19-21)

There is nothing wrong with being wealthy…

God blesses many people with wealth…

WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR WEALTH HOWEVER IS A DIFFERENT STORY...

Dont store it up for your glory…

There was a book written about this…like 8 movies made…”A Christmas Carol”

Dont be a scrooge…

Your wealth is no longer measured in dollars and possessions…It’s measured in God’s Glory!

1 Timothy 6:17–19 “As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”

Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

GIVE TO GLORIFY

Give in Willingness to the Lord (v22-24)

Money cannot be co-master with the Lord

We are called to bear one another’s burdens, to support and help one another, to have grace and generosity…

NO WHERE IN THE NT IS GIVING A LAWFUL COMMAND…

SEE TITHING IN THE OT…JESUS DOESN’T TELL YOU TO TITHE IN THE NT…ITS OF THE LAW…HE SET YOU FREE FROM THE BONDAGE OF THE LAW

TITHING WAS FORCED…YOU HAD TO TITHE TO UPHOLD THE LAW…

HOWEVER>>>>

THE LORD CALLS US TO GIVE WILLINGLY…IN WORSHIP ANS SERVICE TO HIM!!!

NOT OUT OF OBLIGATION…BUT OUT OF A WILLINGNESS TO GLORIFY HIM!!!

BIG IDEA: God calls His people to give willingly, out of trust and obedience to Him, for His glory alone.

WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE????

APPLICATION:

2 Corinthians 8 and 9

THE ONLY PERSON WE WANT TO SEE US AND HEAR US GIVING IS THE LORD!!!

LIKE A LITTLE BOY…DOING THE RIGHT THING…LOOK DAD!!! I DID IT!!! WATCH ME DO IT DAD!!!!

WHY IS JESUS PREACHING THIS???

THE SAME REASON WE ARE PREACHING IT…

Even the humblest of men and women can fall into this very easily….

Whether your giving to your local church body, to a local organization, to your neighbor in need, the homeless, even to your own family members…

Give humbly…Give willingly…Give to Glorify!!!
