1 No Longer a slave to sin Romans 6:1-14
Romans 5 is all about the hope that we have in Christ.
We are secure in our relationship with Christ. We have confidence that with Christ we have the hope of heaven. In Adam’s fall we sin all but in Christ we are saved for all of eternity.
Romans 6 answers the next question. I am saved, NOW WHAT?
Question and Answer Time
Romans 6:1–2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
The more we sin the more grace we get.
Hey you ever heard an unshackled testimony. I love those. I was a wicked awful person I did drugs I had five failed marriages I murdered my next door neighbor, but praise God Jesus saved me. Guess what that is a wonderful thing so maybe I should have a testimony like that other guy. Should I keep on sinning?????
Paul’s answer - CERTAINLY NOT! me genoito: which is the strong negative, literally may it never be.
We died to sin. Don’t return to the death.
Proverbs 26:11 As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly.
This is nothing new. This is Stockholm syndrome.
Exodus 16:3 And the children of Israel said to them, “Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
The term die to sin is singular.
22 times in Romans 5-8 the word sin is singular.
Sin in these chapters isn’t a specific sin, but the personification of the slave master sin.
Baptized into Christ
Romans 6:3–4 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
When we are baptized we join in a union with Christ Jesus.
1 We participate in His death on the cross. (Propitiation)
1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
2 We share in the joy of His resurrection.
Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.
3 We have new life in Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Every time you see a person engage in water baptism it is doing these three things. Join with Jesus death on the cross to pay for sins. You are paying the price Jesus blood did that you are dying to sin with him. You join with Him in resurrection. You go to heaven to live with Him forever and you have new live in Christ a different kind of life.
Does Water Baptism save you? - No
Water Baptism is one of the two given sacraments of the church but it doesn’t not save.
Is water baptism symbolic of what Jesus did for us? - Kind of but not really
Paul does not use the WORD “LIKE” to symbolically tie baptism as a metaphor. It is more than a metaphor
So what is Water Baptism?
It identifies you as joining with Christ! It is similar to a wedding ceremony.
Can people be married without a wedding ceremony. Sure some people have been married at a death bed, but we still do not take away the wedding ceremony.
The conversion experience is a large event that is momentarily consummated.
Water baptism is a shorthand for the conversion experience.
The thief on the cross
Luke 23:40–43 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
The Philippian Jailer
Acts 16:30–33 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized.
The Ethiopian Eunuch
Acts 8:35–38 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
When were these people saved? I don’t know the second it was an event. Like a marriage with a proposal, engagement, ceremony, signing of a document, and celebration. Only Christ can tell you what is necessary but if you haven’t been saved accepted Christ and baptised you are missing a big part of what it means to be saved.
United with Christ
Romans 6:5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
If we died with Christ to sin we will be alive with Christ in His resurrection.
Both go together death to sin and eternal life in resurrection. Don’t separate the two
Believers are raised with Christ.
Ephesians 2:6–7 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
The Crucifixion killed sin.
Romans 6:6–7 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.
Crucifixion did kill Jesus yes, he physically died there is no such thing as the swoon theory - that Jesus only appeared dead but didn’t really die. No Jesus died and was buried in the ground. But He didn’t stay dead. What permanently died that day was sin. Sin died that day on the cross.
The old man died on the cross.
old man - our connection to Adam.
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
That man that was corporately guilty with Adam is dead and gone.
Sin was permanently nailed to the cross.
Colossians 2:14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Sin died that day. Not your soul but the old sin nature.
Ephesians 4:22–24 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
You no longer the old sinner you once were you are new in Christ Jesus.
Old man = Sinner, New Man = an image bearer.
Colossians 3:9–11 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.
Hope of Redemption
We are alive in Christ to die no more.
Romans 6:8–9 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
We join in a union with Christ death. That is kind of a negative. We are alive forever in Christ we join with Him in Resurrection. There are so many things I learn that I want to hang on to. Resurrection morning is for you, it’s primarily about Jesus but not just about Jesus. You are alive because He lives. that is a positive you are no longer a slave to sin this is the power of redemption.
Because He lives I can face tomorrow, Because He lives all fear is gone, Now life is worth the living just because He lives. We join with Christ in His resurrection.
We no longer dwell in the realm of Sin and Death and Hell our kingdom is Christ’s
We are no longer in the kingdom of sin, but in the Kingdom of Christ.
Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
Conveyed - that is what baptism does it conveys you from sin’s kingdom to God’s kingdom.
Jesus died once for sin, but His life is eternal.
Romans 6:10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
That is the power of the cross of Jesus. His death only need to take place once. But His life is eternal.
There is eternal power in the resurrection.
Philippians 3:10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
See that union with Christ in His death and resurrection again. This is a key topic for the Christian. Have you joined with Christ and what He did on the cross.
Indicative - statement of fact (you are dead to sin and alive to God)
Romans 6:11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
It is a done deal because of what Christ did for you on the cross. It is a gift from God.
Imperative - directive or command (live like you belong to God)
Romans 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.
Reign with Christ
Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
If you join with Christ in He resurrection you kick sin out of the throne of your heart and you reign with Christ and sin and death have been killed to you. They can not touch you the command is to live like it.
The resurrection of Christ is already real to the Christian.
Romans 6:13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Present yourselves to God.
1 Kings 10:8 Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom!
Solomon’s men presented themselves to him as their king. Esther presented herself to the King as a good subject. We should do the same to Christ
present (paristemi) is to offer or to dedicate in service to a king
You are already living your eternal life. Live as if you are a citizen of heaven as an ambassador.
You are in the kingdom of God’s Grace
Praise God
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Dominion (Kyrios) it is the word “lord” or dominate you
Does sin dominate your life.
1 John 3:9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
You are free of sin.
John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Someone quoted this verse to me a dozen times. They wanted me to tell everyone what a terrible person Joe Biden is and that I needed to tell the world how awful that man was. I didn’t do that. You know why? That is totally not what this verse is talking about. I had someone else tell me that people in church needed to hear the truth about flouride in the water and about the twin towers. They quoted this verse. I refused. I am not hear to tell you your truth or Fox news truth or CNN’s truth or Alex Jones’ truth. The truth that sets your free from sin is the gospel. That verse you will know the truth and the truth will set you free is so misquoted. The truth is that Jesus died for your sins and died three days later to give you life in heaven, it is the gospel and we all need to hear it often. That you are no long a slave to sin, you are a child of God.
Jesus had to be clear of who the worst slave master was.
John 8:34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
As a church Jesus death, burial, and resurrection is vital to our faith.
Jesus came to save you from the law.
Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
Jesus joined you under the law. He knows what you are going through but we are no longer under the iron fist of the law but under the riches of God’s grace.
The law has no power over you.
John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
The gospel message is the cross of Christ and His empty tomb.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 is the mission statement of the early church, it is their core doctrine. In Romans 6 Paul has elaborated on that and through Baptism we join in union with Christ in those things. Man baptism is important why don’t we treat it that way?
2 Jesus is our new LORD Romans 6:15-23
New topic Question and answer again
Romans 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!
Me genoito: what does it mean?
By no means or absolutely not
Just because you are saved does not mean that you should sin because of grace.
Don’t Sin!
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
See that don’t sin but if you do sin grace is greater than your sin.
Everyone is a slave to something.
Romans 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
You get the choice of what you will be a slave to, what are people a slave to.
You can be a slave to sin, sex, drugs, rock and roll, movies, money, the job, lies, sports, murder, hatred, you name it or you can be a slave to Jesus! Jesus is the king of righteousness and provides heaven
Sin leads to death
This is so true and people don’t take that into account of their actions. I believe that you can not escape slavery to sin. If you are an addict they say you are always and addict. The alcoholic can’t beat it. They may be sober for years but they are still addicted. I have met people truly free of the addiction. Everyone is a believer. You may say well you have a small sample size and your a pastor so your opinion is skewed. But I believe the scriptures and my limited experience backs that up.
Thank God, He delivers us.
Romans 6:17–18 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
Like conversion, the salvation and sanctification is immediate and a process at the same time.
2 Corinthians 1:9–10 Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us,
Deliverance from the power of the slavery of sin happens immediately but the full weight of it’s power is progressive.
Acknowledge Jesus is Lord!
Romans 6:19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
I do not believe in Lordship as a means to salvation, salvation is by grace alone, but the natural transition of salvation will be Jesus is Lord. I know that this is grasping at straws but if you are a Christians the next this that you do is become under grace, part of God’s kingdom. Jesus is LORD once you are saved. Salvation what He does for us which conveys us from the kingdom of darkness to God’s kingdom remember Colossians 1 that is the truth
This is metaphorical Paul says so, You stop giving yourself over to sin “Oh great and terrible Master” and instead you bow the knee to Jesus
Spoiled Fruit
Romans 6:20–21 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
When you were slaves to sin you probably looked at Christians and thought yuck those goodie too shoes but now you see that life without Christ is like opening a rotten tomato it looks good on the outside but stinks on the inside
Fruit to death
Galatians 5:19–21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Fresh Fruit
Galatians 5:22–23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
Notice there is no law there is only grace. We are under grace
Fruit of Holiness
Romans 6:22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
Set free from sin
Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Slaves to God
Jude 1 “Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ:”
Holiness - hagiasmos denotes the character of God.
1 Peter 1:16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
Holy, fresh fruit provides eternal life.
1 Peter 1:3–4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
Notice the difference
Rotten, spoiled fruit of sin - death
Fresh fruit of holiness - life
Why would you continue to eat spoiled rotten fruit
Embrace God’s Grace
Should we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid!
Take this verse out of isolation.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We use this verse isolated from the chapter. FINE, use it as a gospel verse but think of the implications
You as a Christian have two kinds of fruit in front of you.
SIN or GRACE
Sinful fruit lead to death why keep eating the wicked fruit
Holy Fruit is grace the gospel a gift from God and eating it leads to eternal life.
Chose the good fruit
This verse is great for the unbeliever but applicable in context for the believer
Chapter 6 starts Should we continue in sin that grace may abound? The entire chapter makes arguments against that claim, verse 23 is the conclusion.
For the wages of that sin is death! Quit eating rotten fruit
You have the gospel of Jesus Christ and His grace, it is life! Chose to eat the fruit of holiness
That is not a works based salvation it is a plea to not be like Israel when they left Egypt
Don’t go back to your vomit don’t return to sin the world and death. You have salvation the promised land grace and holiness that is fresh fruit Embrace it.
