Christ suffered to free us from the bondage of sin.
Christ suffered to free us from the bondage of sin.
What I want us to understand in today's lesson and really for our understanding of so much of the Word of God, is this. Isaiah 53 is a prophecy, a word from God that is a foretelling, a predictive word.
The test of a prophetic word is its fulfillment.
Which brings us to today’s lesson.
DESPISED AND REJECTED
Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Lowly Beginnings
Isaiah 53:1–2 (NKJV)
Who has believed our report? Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
Who would believe that God would choose to save the world through a humble. suffering servant rather than a glorious king. We all know God works in ways we don’t expect.
Because Jesus appearance was just another face in the crowd, he was not like Saul, an impressive and striking figure. In 1 Samuel 9:2 , it is written, Saul, a choice and handsome young man.
People were attracted to Jesus only as they saw Him through the eyes of faith.
Man of Suffering
Isaiah 53:3 (NKJV)
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.
The Lord already knew He would not be accepted by the people He came to save. Israel rejected His claim to be their Messiah
