What are we here for?
What are we here for?
Welcome back and Happy New Year
Any new resolutions?
Why were we created?
7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
We were created for God’s glory
It is our life pursuit - or should be
“We do not segment our lives, giving some time to God, some to our business or schooling, while keeping parts to ourselves. The idea is to live all of our lives in the presence of God, under the authority of God, and for the honor and glory of God. That is what the Christian life is all about.” RC Sproul
33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
So the question is, how do we glorify God?
What is your list?
I believe it can be broken down into 2 areas:
Knowing Him
Making Him Known
It starts with knowing - and moves to making known
I know I mentioned studying the names of God, but I think I have a plan
Let me show how the order makes sense by starting with the latter and work toward knowing and then the plan.
Do you trust me?
Before we do that lets pray
Making Him Known
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Notice it doesn’t say make converts - it says disciples
As you are going - constant
Making Him Known = Disciple-making
Evangelism
15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Follow-up
7 But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. 8 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.
Discipleship
2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
This is an ongoing process - it is on all of us
Charles Spurgeon would put it this way
Our great object of glorifying God is to be mainly achieved by the winning of souls Do not close a single sermon without addressing the ungodly.
But how to we make Him known if we do not really know him?
For us to glorify God we must:
Know Him
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Desire to meet with God
1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
Discipline to meet with God
7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
Dependence on God
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.
John Piper
There is no greater pursuit than to know the depths of who God is
Eternity is not enough time
33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
Know Him - Make Him Known
Know Him - Make Him Known
So, together we are going on a journey to first know God in a real and personal way.
We will move to making Him known for the second half of this study
Names once signified more than a title - it was who the person is and what they were like
We can learn an know a lot about the character and heart of God by His names
There's a difference between knowing God and knowing about God. When you truly know God, you have energy to serve Him, boldness to share Him, and contentment in Him.
J. I. Packer
We will start with the name God Declares for Himself.
Next week read - Exodus 3:13-15 Exodus 34:5-7
