what does a disciple of Christ look like?
this is what we have been looking at in ch 17
we are going to take a little turn here in V 20
The Pharisees want to know when is the Kingdom coming
we have looked at the kingdom extensively over the last few months
but Dr Luke keeps bringing up the subject
so will we
turn to Daniel 2 27.

there is a King
there is a sovereign
there is a Kingdom
V 20 when is this Kingdom coming?
Jesus responds

what the Israelites did not know is the church age
but right then the kingdom was in Israel
the King was in their midst
Nebu. knew that Yahweh was king and He reigned on this earth
now they have Jesus Emmanuel (God with us)
Wherever God the Son is the Kingdom is there
V 21 the kingdom is in your midst
what the Israelites are doing is confusing the beginning of the kingdom with the second coming of Christ
the kingdom that Jesus was now proclaiming is the spiritual kingdom
a kingdom where Jesus reigns in your heart
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus invites people to Join the kingdom
over and over we have seen Jesus tell the Pharisees that their sin is keeping them out of the kingdom
that they needed to repent
Jesus had already showed them signs that he was the Christ
that He was the king
all of the miracles that Jesus did John called them signs
after Jesus fed the 5000 they wanted to make Him king
lets see the progression of the events in John 6.
Now a large crowd was following Him, because they were seeing the signs which He was doing on those who were sick.
then Jesus feeds the crowd
afterward ..
Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had done, they were saying, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
So Jesus, knowing that they were going to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
He tells them the next day
Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
“Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, set His seal.”
Jesus here is inviting them into the kingdom
but they are all about works
what work do I do?
Therefore they said to Him, “What should we do, so that we may work the works of God?”
the work is believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved
enter into the spiritual kingdom
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
They followed Jesus because of the signs
they ate the bread from Jesus hand
they wondered how Jesus crossed the sea without a boat
Jesus had to stop them from making Him king
after all that …
So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform?
If someone is not regenerated they can not and will not believe and be saved
signs signs signs
this is exactly what they want in Luke 17 20
when is it coming??
It’s here now!!
V 21 the King is talking to you!!
wherever the king reigns is the kingdom
whether it is the time of Daniel
or the time of the apostle Peter
but really what they want to know is the second coming of Christ
where He will reign from the throne of David
in Jerusalem
and Jesus will teach his disciples starting in V 22
