(Do “different” comparisons. Tall, short, white, black, girl, boy, young. old)
It’s ok to be different. In fact, not only does God make us different, he calls us to be different. And that is what we are going to see this morning, how we should live different as believers in Jesus Christ. And most importantly, who are you? So as we open God’s Word this morning, let’s stand and say what we believe.
The Bible is the Word of God. The Truth of the Bible will change my life. Lord open my heart, and awaken my mind, and give me grace to respond. Change me, for your glory and my joy, amen.
This morning and for the next four weeks we are going to look into God’s Word and see how we are called to be different. Not because we are taller, shorter, light or dark, or young or old, but our differences comes because of who we are in Christ. This morning, if you have given your life to the Lord, you are a Christina, a believer, and have been saved by the grace of God, God expects YOU TO BE DIFFERENT. You Should be different. From the moment, by faith you believed in Jesus, and confessed with your mouth that he is Lord, you became a different person. Did you eternity change, yes. Do you now have the hope of heaven in the presence of the Lord when you die? Yes. But there is more. Before that time comes, as you live your life here in Opi, or wherever you go in your life….you are called to be different. And that difference should be seen in your life.
Peter was one of Jesus’ disciples. You know Peter. He was a fisherman when Jesus called him to follow him. For over three years, Peter was right there by Jesus’ side. He witnessed Jesus’ miracles, his teachings, and when Jesus asked who am I? What did Peter say? In Matthew 16, he said: “YOU ARE THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD.”
Peter wasn’t perfect. He didn’t always do the right thing. Remember Peter denied Jesus three times. He said “I don’t even know who this man is!”
If you think back to time that Peter denied Christ, he was only thinking about himself. He was denying because he was fearing other people and what they were thinking of him or what they would do to him because he knew Jesus and was one on his disciples. He was just trying to be part of the crowd, just part of the people, part of the crowd.
But as a Christian, that is not who we should be. Are you hearing me? As a believer in Jesus, we are not to be like everyone else. We not not to be like the world one else. We should not act like the world. We should not think like the world. We should be different.
After Peter denied Jesus three times, Jesus was crucified, and then the greatest thing happened that has ever happened in history… Jesus rose from the grave. And when Jesus rose from the grave, he spent 40 days on earth before he went into heaven, and one of things he did before he went to heaven, was that he sat down and had a morning meal with Peter beside the water. Jesus forgave Peter, and told him to “feed my sheep.” And that is what Peter did for the rest of his life. He set his heart and mind on being different. He was bold is his belief, bold in speech, and bold in his faith.
Let’s learn how we can be different here in Opi. Open your Bibles to 1 Peter Chapter 2.
The book of 1 Peter is a letter written to believers, those who are saved that are in another country from where Peter was. And because they are not where he was, he wanted to remind them of who they were in Christ. He wanted to encourage them how they should live and think because of their salvation through Jesus Christ.
Think about it this way. Our graduates, before they left here were coming to Bible Studies, coming to church every week. They were constantly hearing the Word of God. It was feeding their soul all the time. But now, they have gone out. And some of them, don’t go to church, don’t read their Bible, don’t go to a bible study. So when they are not looking to the Word of God and not hearing the preaching of the Word, they can forget who they are in Christ, and what God wants for them. So Mom and I, reach out to them, encourage them to make sure they find a church, make sure they are reading the Bible.
And this is what Peter is doing with this letter. He is reminding them of who they are in Christ, and how their lives should be seen where they are.
In 1 Peter 1 , Peter reminds them of the hope they have through the resurrection and belief in Jesus and he tells them that they should live holy lives because the God who saved them was holy. Then in the beginning of Chapter 2, Peter begins to compare those who are believers to those who are not. He gives us a picture of a stone… a cornerstone. And those who are his, beleivers, will never be disgraced. But those who reject him, will fall. Not fall down to the ground, but fall away from him and never entering into heaven.
But look what he says to the believers…. (verse 9)
1 Peter 2:9–12 NLT
9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” 11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. 12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.
This reminder and instruction from Peter should help us understand who we are, how we should be, and the difference we can make if we chose to be different.
So first, Peter says
Who are you?
Look at verse 9:
1 Peter 2:9 (NLT)
9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
Think about that. This is how God sees you as his child. Doesn’t that sound good that he sees you as chosen, a royal priest, a holy nation, his very own possession. If you are saved, that is you! Peter tells them…you are a chosen people. You are royal priests. You are God’s very own possession. By the way, does any of that sound familiar? Did he also choose other people? Did he set others apart?
In Genesis, God made a covenant with Abraham that from him, God would build a great nation. Then in Exodus after this great nation of people had grown, God wanted Moses to give this message to the people.
Exodus 19:3–6 NLT
3 Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God. The Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. 6 And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”
Just as God looked at the Israelites back in the Old Testament, he still looks at his believers today and says you are chosen, you are a royal priest, you are my own possession. That is how he sees you. How else does Peter say Who we are?
1 Peter 2:10 (NLT)
10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”
We are special…we are God’s people. BUT LISTEN, BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU HEAR SOMEONE SAY, I AM GOD’s Child. ITS TRUE, EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN BORN CAN SAY THEY ARE A CHILD OF GOD, BUT TO SAY GOD IS MY FATHER, CAN ONLY BE SAID BY THE PERSON WHO KNOW SET HIS FACE TOWARDS GOD AND RECIEVES HIS MERCY BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN REDEEMED BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST. Before we came to belief by faith, we had no identification. We were not in him. But now we are. Not everyone can say that. Everyone can say they were created by God, but not everyone can say they are God’s people. God’s people are those who believe by faith and confess with their mouth that he is Lord.
What else? Who are you?
1 Peter 2:11 (NLT)
11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.
What does this mean? “temporary residents and foreigners” That means that even though you live in this world, this world is not your home. You may be Igbo, or Hausa, or Youraba…. you may be Nigerian or from Cameron… but as a Christian, you are just visiting this place…you real place is with God and one day you will move into your eternal home to be in his presence forever.
That is Who we are: * chosen people, royal priests, God’s own possession * God’s people * temporary residents and foreigners
So, because this is who we are in Christ, How Should we be? Look at verse 9:
1 Peter 2:9 (NLT)
9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
Because we are his very own possession and have been raised from darkness to life, we can show others the goodness of God. If you are a Christian, you have been given the best gift you will ever receive. Better than any Christmas gift, better than any amount of money…those things are all temporary. If you have recieved Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you have a hope that cannot be taken away, a gift that will never spoil.
Paul, in the book of Titus says talks about how good this gift is…
Titus 1:1–2 (NLT)
1 This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives.
2 This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began.
How should we be? We should share with others the goodness of God. How can we do that…tell them about what you have recieved….eternal life through faith and belief in Jesus Christ. As happy as you are that you have been saved, we should not keep that to ourselves. Peter says to show others.
Not just with words, but with actions. What does that mean. How you treat people. How you are honest. How you live by the words you say. Do people know you follow Christ by the way you talk or the way you love people. Do they know where you stand in yoru faith by the way you live?
Why does this matter? Why should we show ourselves as believers in your home, your school, and on the road?
Because you can make a difference.
Look at verse 12
1 Peter 2:12 (NLT)
12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.
When you understand who you are as a Christian: God’s own chosen possession. And you understand how you should be: showing others the goodness that you have seen. Then others will see how YOU honor God and they may choose to honor God as well.
Think about that. Are you being different from the world? Do you understand how precious your salvation is, and how God wants you to do more that just wait for heaven. He wants you to be activly living your life as his chosen possession so that others will recieve the same gift you have been given.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:16
Matthew 5:16 NLT
16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Do you remember as I began I said that Peter wasn’t perfect. He made many mistakes. He sinned. But when Jesus met with Peter beside the water he asked him….
John 21:15 (NLT)
15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.
In that moment, Peter decided to be different. He decided that he would make a stand for Jesus. Do you remember what he did next? He stood up boldly and preached on the Day of Pentecost. And what happened?
Acts 2:41 NLT
41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
Why did 3000 believe that day? Why were 3000 people now moved from eternal death to eternal life… because Peter chose to be different.
What are you choosing to do? Are you just living a life that suits you? Going your own way? Or are you choosing to be different for the God that saved you and is bringing you eternal life?
