Title of the Series this Morning is “Joy”
Title of the Message this Morning is:
Enjoying God
Week 1
Big Idea - Experiencing and enjoying God’s awesomeness makes us joyful.
Prayer-
“Father in heaven, you are victorious, you are gracious, and you are awesome!
Help us this week to meditate on your awesomeness and increase our joy in the process.”
Main Scripture - Psalm 47

Introduction

Welcome church! Today we’re starting a new 5-week series all about JOY!
Joy is more than a fleeting emotion; it is a deep and abiding sense of gladness that comes from knowing and trusting God.
Joy is rooted in the unchanging character of God and His promises.
The Bible shows us that true joy flows from our relationship with Christ, sustained by the Holy Spirit, and is meant to be a defining mark of the Christian life.
Through this series, we’ll discover how joy can transform our hearts, guide our perspective, and overflow into every area of our lives
To begin today, Psalms 47 was written by a warrior who was one of the sons of Korah.
The sons of Korah were those that were custodians of the tabernacle.
They would help clean the tabernacle and the took care of it.
But they were also mighty men.
(Mighty Men - Concept) a group of warriors in the Bible known for their bravery and loyalty, often associated with King David.
And they wrote 11 Psalms about joy in God.
Here's the secret of joy that were going to learn from the sons of Korah.
One of the secrets to joy is experiencing God's awesomeness , which they just experienced in battle.
And that's what were going to learn as we look at the Psalms 47 today.
Experiencing God's awesomeness, it makes you joyful.

Main Teaching

Read Psalm 47
So we're going to look through this psalm that they wrote and learn just a couple things about joy.
But let me just make a few observations about joy.
The first thing I get from the first verse is that joy is often visible.

What is Joy?

1. Joy is often visible.
Joy is often visible, meaning you can see it.
The verse says, “clap your hands, all you peoples.”
And I don't know if this is an applause or if this is just when they're happy that they just start clapping their hands.
There are other indicators that joy is something you can see. (if some is joyful, I can see it)
The Psalms said we are to shout to God with a jubilant cry.
Verse 5 says for God is to ascend among shouts of joy.
This is not a quiet thing that's going on here.
The second thing that I see in here is that joy is partially a feeling that happens to you
2. Joy is partially a feeling.
Having joy, in this circumstance, is something that kind of happened to the sons of Korah.
In this sense, happiness and joy are very similar.
You could replace one with the other.
You could say, “man, I'm happy, man, I'm joyful.”
And they're very much the same thing.
I am happy when my team wins.
I am joyful when my team wins.
Very much the same.
But joy is different from happiness.
3. You can have joy when you aren’t happy.
This is from James 1:2
2 Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4 And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
When you are unhappy with life, somehow you can count it or consider it or think about it as a joy.
In this way, happiness is different from joy. Happiness is fleeting while joy can be experienced during tough times.
4. God gives joy.
God is the one that gives joy.
And this is from Romans 15. Listen to this.
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. - Romans 15:13
Notice it says that God is the one that fills you with joy.
So there's some aspect of joy that comes from God.
So, that is just a little bit of an understanding of joy.
Joy is often a visible expression from God that can be experienced under any circumstance.
Now let's look at Psalm 47.
We will see three reasons that we can be joyful.
1. Rejoice that God is King
Verses 1-2 say;
Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a jubilant cry.
2 For the Lord, the Most High, is awe-inspiring, a great King over the whole earth.
It is a safe and comforting feeling to know that God is king.
God knows the future.
Let's put him in charge.
He knows what's going to happen.
He knows what people are going to do.
He's a God of love who has a controlled, righteous anger.
And that kind of anger that he has rightly punishes the wicked.
He can run the world perfectly, despite the people that are living in it.
He's not limited by space.
He is everywhere present, fully present at all times.
When I think about how awesome God is, it pulls my eyes off of myself and puts them on God.
So here's our application
I can increase my joy by learning about God.
This is one of the ways you can increase your joy.
When you learn how awesome someone or something is it makes you joyful.

Illustration

Let me illustrate using Simone Biles.
She has 37 World and Olympic medals combined.
She's the most decorated gymnast of all time.
She has scored over 30 world titles, 23 gold medals from the Olympics.
She has five maneuvers or skills named after her that she created.
So she's in a league of her own, making up her own skills and trying to beat herself when she competes.
Here's the other thing I learned about her: she can jump almost 12ft in the air when doing her floor routine.
That is measuring from the mat up to her head.
Her feet could clear something that is seven feet in the air.
Shaq is 7’1” She could within an inch of jumping as high as Shaq is Tall when doing her acrobatics floor routine.
That is awesome.
That is amazing.
The more Pepper and I would watch her in the Olympics
The more and more I learned about Simone Biles, the more and more I was actually impressed by her.
two things happened when I discovered her greatness.
One, I wanted to tell other people about it.
I wanted to brag about her.
And second, it changed my demeanor.
Just being in the presence and understanding something awesome, it lifts you up and it increases my Joy.
It's the same way with God.
When we go on a journey to learn about how awesome God is, that lifts us out of our thinking about ourselves and get us thinking about something lofty.
That will increase the joy that we have.
He is infinite, eternal, unchangeable, invisible.
He's good, loving, holy, powerful. He is not bound by time, he is not bound by space, and he knows everything. He is an awesome God.
My suggestion is to do a study about the characteristics of God.
Here is a website about praying the attributes of God https://www.navigators.org/resource/praying-names-attributes-god/]
copy web-leak in the comment sections:
Another way that we can experience God's awesomeness, which makes us joyful, is that we can rejoice because God is victorious.
2. Rejoice that God is victorious
Look at verse 1-3
Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a jubilant cry.
2 For the Lord, the Most High, is awe-inspiring, a great King over the whole earth.
3 He subdues peoples under us and nations under our feet.
When they were writing at that time, they were writing about 1000 BC during the time of David, when David was expanding his territory.
And this theme of victory is fascinating to me because it is all throughout the Bible.
We see God first having a victory over the Egyptian army, which is one of the most formidable armies at that time.
God gives victory to Joshua over AI and Jericho as they enter in the promised land.
God gives David victory over Goliath and the Philistines.
We also have Jesus' victory over the evil powers in the gospels.
Jesus comes and he starts at victory over the powers of evil and darkness and spirits, and he starts to drive them back.
Ultimately Jesus dies and he rises from the dead, having victory over death itself.
One day, Jesus will have final victory over all of evil at the end.
When I look forward to that day, that gives me joy.
I get a sense of contentment, a sense of joy, a smile comes to my face just thinking about the end times.
When I think about one day, all the pain, sorrow, and evil will be no more.
We all should have that future to look forward to.
Revelation 21.4
4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
So, another way to increase your joy is to learn God's story and look at all the different elements of victory that are in the Bible.
I can increase my joy by learning God’s story.
One of the best things is God has victories all the time and he can have victory in your life over that nagging thing that you didn't think you could have victory over.
You can be victorious because HE is victorious.
Whatever's going on in your life, you can have victory over it and God can help you.

Conclusion

The big idea is that experiencing God's awesomeness like the psalmist did, that's what makes us joyful, that we were to rejoice in God, that He is king, and he is the one who is infinite and powerful.
And the more we learn about God, the more we can have joy.
And just think about how awesome he is, and it brings a smile to our face.
And last, we can rejoice that God is the one that gives us good things.
So pray that you begin Enjoying God's awesomeness and write that psalm of joy to your heavenly God.

Let’s pray together.

Salvation:

The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Benediction

Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a jubilant cry. 2 For the Lord, the Most High, is awe-inspiring, a great King over the whole earth. 3 He subdues peoples under us and nations under our feet.
We do not draw people to Christ by loudly discrediting what they believe, by telling them how wrong they are and how right we are, but by showing them a light that is so lovely that they want with all their hearts to know the source of it.” -Madeliene L’Engle (Lang ill)
