Holy Terror

the fruit born by acting in step with the flesh; walking in the flesh and continuing as an enemy of God
James 2:19 LSB
19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
James 1:14–15 LSB
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully matured, it brings forth death.
contextually we know this to be Herod Antipas, ruler of the Galilean region until AD 39. He divorced his wife, Herodias divorced Herod Philip, and they were married. Her daughter could not have been more than 14 years old, maybe as young as 12.
Matthew 4:12 “12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He departed into Galilee;”
Matthew 4:17 “17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.””
Matthew 11:9–15 “9 “But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. 10 “This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way before You.’ 11 “Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force. 13 “For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. “And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come. 15 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
v.4 - Lev. 18:16
Leviticus 18:16 LSB
16 ‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness.

The Predicament

context - even up to half of his kingdom (figure of speech)
oath - a promise often invoking a divine witness that carries severe penalties if not fulfilled.
political - obviously Herodias was an ambitious woman, Antipas’ region of rule was far greater and more powerful than Philips. She cannot have the people against her and her new marriage.
lust - perverse, leads to destruction
Prov. 5-9 ignorance, sin, apathy towards wisdom is personified in feminine terms. She is alluring, but will only bring you to destruction. Previous Proverbs personify wisdom also in feminine terms, her fruit bearing life.
v.9 - grieved, sad - 2 Cor. 7:10
2 Corinthians 7:10 LSB
10 For godly sorrow produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world brings about death.
Herod is brought to murder by pleasure

Compassionate Grief

context - Jesus sails off by Himself not seeking to further escalate or draw attention before the time ordained for Him to triumphantly and finally enter Jerusalem. we also know He grieves. John 11 describes the scene at Lazarus tomb where we see Jesus grieve even though resurrection is about to happen
that time on the water were private moments of grief for a family member, a messenger, a prophet, an ally, a brother, and for the greatest man born among women
as soon as He sees a crowd He is not annoyed, angry, disturbed - He is compassionate
my lack of compassion after Mom’s funeral, while other family members became more compassionate
Jesus is brought to compassion through grief
Isaiah 53:4 LSB
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
Hebrews 3-4 - HE is able to sympathize, He went through it
He feels compassion in the deepest part of His being and Sovereignly ordains to endure it for the glory He has established through it
