In your normal group ride, you have half a lane. No more, no less. Unless you are in the front, your half a lane is chosen for you by the position of the bike in front of you.
If you violate this, not only will it annoy some of the other riders in the group, it is dangerous.
Beyond the literal, staying in your line has other context with which we are familiar.
At work, taking on extra duties and responsibilities is often times a good thing; and (full confession) I almost titled todays message That’s not my job. but I have is distain for that phrase because when he hear people say that it in the context of the person being lazy or thinking that something is beneath them.
We should be willing to go the extra mile, to borrow a biblical concept, but there is a thing, as kids will say of, “You’re trying to do too much.”
This morning, as we continue into Hebrews chapter 8, we get to see the lane marking of our interaction with others.
It has been said that,
Hebrews is a letter written by a Hebrew to Hebrews telling them to stop acting like Hebrews.
The book of Hebrews is a contrast between being a follower of the Law and being a follower of Christ.
Jesus vs. Angels
Jesus vs. Moses and the Law.
Jesus vs. Levitical priesthood
Old covenant in the law and the new covenant in Christ.
The beginning of chapter 8 is putting the final touches on Christ as High Priest, which we went over last week, so today we pick up in verse 7. where the writer sets the stage for his argument.
Hebrews 8:7 NASB95
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second.
If the covenant that God made with Abraham was perfect, you wouldn’t need another covenant.
Quotes from the prophet Jeremiah.
Hebrews 8:8 NASB95
8 For finding fault with them, He says, Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, When I will effect a new covenant With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;
Here is the continuation of the argument the writer mad in vs. 7.
If the covenant was perfect, there would be no need for a new covenant.
Vs. 8: There will be a new covenant.
Therefore, The old covenant wasn’t perfect and the new covenant is superior to the old one.
The truth is this, the old covenant was only meant to point us to the new covenant.
Problem with the first covenant.
Hebrews 8:9 NASB95
9 Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers On the day when I took them by the hand To lead them out of the land of Egypt; For they did not continue in My covenant, And I did not care for them, says the Lord.
Not only have we read elsewhere that the purpose of the first covenant was to point to the new covenant, but there was also a problem with man holding up his end of the bargain.
Covenant: an agreement between two parties:
Hebrews 8:10–12 NASB95
10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds, And I will write them on their hearts. And I will be their God, And they shall be My people. 11And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, And everyone his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ For all will know Me, From the least to the greatest of them. 12For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And I will remember their sins no more.”
Three promises:
I: VS. 10: Laws into their minds and into their hearts.
Jeremiah was pointing to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
But know it is written on your heart, so that when other people “read” your heart, they would know more about Christ, whom you follow.
Paul, in 2 Corinthians say,
You: are a letter of Christ.
2 corinthians 3:3
2 Corinthians 3:3 NASB95
3 being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
II I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
This speaks of an intimate relationship between You and God.
ALONE WITH HIM.
Group ride you are still alone.
Death : alone.
Relationship with Christ:
A relationship implies an intimate knowledge.
Hebrews 8:11 NASB95
11And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, And everyone his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ For all will know Me, From the least to the greatest of them.
NOT TEACH TO “KNOW THE LORD.”
I can’t teach you to know the Lord. I can teach you to know about him.
Before a baby can walk or talk, they “Know” the people or person raising them.
Grand kids: asking who everyone is: MOM. Dat.
Didn’t know that her name was Katie, didn’t know when her birthday is.
They don’t know everything about their parents, but they know them.
So it is with the Father. You either know Him, or you don’t.
MY LANE: Teach about Him, His covenant, How we should walk through this world in light of our knowledge of HIM.
But not to know HIM.
1 John 2:27 NASB95
27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
John 10:27 NASB95
27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
III. Completely remove our sin.
Hebrews 8:12 NASB95
12For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And I will remember their sins no more.”
1 John 1:9 NASB95
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The new covenant makes the first obsolete.
Hebrews 8:13 NASB95
13 When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.
