John 16:25-33

And before ending the discussion and entering into the High Priestly prayer in John 17, Jesus looks forward to what He would accomplish in His death and resurrection.

In Christ’s own words we have the joy that was set before Him

And in these chapters Jesus has been giving some of His last promises and final instructions.

He’s promise them the grace of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Prepared them for persecution.

Told them to Abide in me and love one another just as I have loved you.

His whole message could perhaps be summarized in John 14:1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”

And what’s unique about this passage is that Jesus… in His own words… gives us the significance of His death and resurrection.

With the shadow of the cross looming over… Jesus tells us what He would accomplish

What He would accomplish…

What the joy that was set before Him was that He was looking forward to (Hebrews 12:1-2)

At end of the Upper Room Discourse where Christ has been giving His last words and final instructions

It comes at the tail end of The Upper Room Discourse… Jesus final words to His Disciples before being betrayed and going to the cross.

And what’s unique about this passage is that with the shadow of the cross looming so large over, we have in Christ’s own words… the significance of the cross and what Jesus would accomplish through His death and resurrection.
